Keep an eye out as it looks as though most of that stretch is about to become a 50 zone. The gatso's have already been installed on both carriageways.....

Yup - spotted them this afternoon. They look pretty permanent, so not likely to be roadworks. As you say, maybe that section is to become a 50 zone (IIRC it would require a change in the law to install Gatsos on a NSL stretch of road - but when has a little thing like that come in the way of revenue gathering ) Though if safety is the issue here (there's the obscured slip road from the A46 if you're heading west) then a warning sign for merging traffic would be better IMO

There is a fixed gatso between J17 and J18 on the westbound carriageway, and that is there to enforce a 50mph roadworks limit.

The roadworks are long term and are supposed to go last until some time next year.

I expect the same will be true of the new ones - when the roadworks are long term, they probably feel it's worth their while installing fixed cameras.

I personally have no problems with cameras sited to enforce roadworks limits - when you have people walking along the motorway speed should be kept down IMO.

Yep - the road works were due to start at the end of Feb and last 44 weeks! So it would be worth concreting them in.

I can imagine the chaos that is going to ensue in this summer's rush west.....

I've read elsewhere on PH that it will be a 40mph speed limit and not the usual 50mph limit.
There's also restrictions with the slip roads, IIRC, you can't exit the M4 at J18 eastbound, nor access the M4 westbound from the A46. Looks like J17 will become busier with diverted traffic !

And guess what? Those two slips are the exact ones I use to go to work! Ho hum - collateral damage I guess.

I drove along this stretch a couple of times yesterday, and even though there were three lanes available, the 40mph limit was in force.
It was so slow with almost every driver flouting the imposed limit (the camers were covered up).
I fully support an appropriate speed restriction when required, but 40 is too slow - particularly when (in this case) the roadworks are long-term (44 weeks) and will most likely, have concrete barrier protection for the workforce, and will IMO only lead to more frustration.
