Next step with watch collection
Discussion
I've been into my watches for around 2 or 3 years now, started off with g shocks and citizens, moved into JDM Seiko pieces and finally Rolex and Tudor.
My first luxury watch was a Rolex explorer 36mm, I got lucky buying blind from chrono 24 and private seller in Germany. (I paid via PayPal using a credit card for protection). It had no box or papers, turned out to be legit, just needed a service and new crystal if you wanted it perfect. I paid 2100 for it, but fancied a brand new piece so sold it to watch finder for exactly what I paid.
Next I moved onto a Tudor pelagos, brand new, paid 2400 cash deal from an AD 4 months before the in house version came out. I've been wearing the Tudor every day since, fast approaching two years on my wrist.
I had plans for a big collection of luxury watches, but the Tudor settled me, it is so discreet and the quality is there, it's a perfect daily.
Now my life has changed a lot in the past year, I've got divorced, lost my house, and had a baby.
To mark the birth of my son I was thinking of buying one of the watches I always wanted. Either a Rolex submariner or the new Rolex explorer 1 39mm. I have some money in the bank from the house and no real plans what to do with it, I can't afford a mortgage and don't want to put it into a depreciating asset like a car, a Rolex seems a safe bet to secure a large chunk of the money while getting enjoyment out of it.
2k down and 125 quid a month for a few years. Defo wont miss it.
Any thoughts?
PS i could buy the watch cash, but it just makes sense to leave cash in my bank, keeps me flexible.

Do it dude, if you can get 0% it's a no brainier
I don't know what they are offering these days, but yeah I would only do it with 0 percent.
What watch to get tho? The discreet Rolex explorer, versatile and timeless, or the legend, submariner.
I've got the pelagos as a daily, I think the pelagos pairs better with the explorer.
I'm really tempted now.
Personally I'd borrow the extra funds needed to open up the vast amount of second hand sellers who don't do 0% interest, or use a 0% credit card facility. There are lots of amazing deals to be had out there if you search and just like cars, the search and the deal are all part of the fun aren't they?
The Sub will overlap with the Pelagos a bit, but it's capable of being worn in dressier situations than the Pelagos, so there's that, and well - it's the Sub - it's iconic & has to be done.
If you want maximum value retention - for future mortgage etc. - the Sub is a better bet than the Explorer - every man & his dog wants a Sub, so re-selling is easier.
Rolex prices consistently outstrip inflation, so after 10 years of happy wearing, you'll be able to get Rolex to service & polish it back to 'as new', and easily sell it for what you paid. I just look at mine as my savings but on the wrist instead of the bank, and a hell of a lot more enjoyable.
Not much point buying second-hand - there's still a shortage of Stainless Steel Subs in the UK, so second-hand prices aren't much less than new AD prices. Plus, since 2015 new Rolex come with +/- 2secs daily accuracy & 5-year warranty, which the old ones don't have. Even after last year's price hike, UK Rolex prices are still cheaper than elsewhere, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Rolex correct their UK pricing upwards again in the next 12-18 months, and it's probably not a bad time to buy.

I agree on not buying used, used prices are crazy in the UK.
I also agree that the sub is a better place to save my money while still getting enjoyment from the watch, but I would end up getting rid of the pelagos.
I think the sub would attract more attention tho. And most non watch guys I see wearing subs are generally
s. I don't know if i why to be associated with them lol.
Tough decision.
The new explorer is perfection tho,

I agree that most people who wear Sub's are w
kers and have no clue whatsoever about watches, nor do they care. Which, of course, is bad news for us who also appreciate them.
However, I have the 114060 and its a perfect watch, and I'm sure you'd love it too, or the Sub date. Deffo go for the Ceramic Sub if poss.
The problem being is that you may be waiting a long time to purchase brand new from an AD. Not so sure about the new Explorer though. They are not very popular so you may get that quicker, and you won't be classed as 'the w
ker with the Sub' Lol.

I would put money towards a house myself if you lost yours(not sure how ones looses a house mind you) over looking at watches but then I am no life expert..
getting divorced and having a baby is also crazy, (a magic baby appears) what on earth have you been doing ?
I guess Jerry Springer pays out if you go on that show for a few £££.
But are you really thinking about buying a £6k watch over being homeless/renting !

Has anyone else noticed that the watch forum is slowly and steadily being infiltrated by people more interested in the value of their watches than the horology?getting divorced and having a baby is also crazy, (a magic baby appears) what on earth have you been doing ?

I'll repeat again. Watches are investments for idiots and clairvoyants only.
I'm hoping this is a wind up. Has new born baby, no house and wants to "invest" in a watch.
I like to think I am not an idiot !
I invest a small % of savings in watches as it happens, mind are up about >30% in 3 years.
my bank has just written to me that my 0.95% savings are going down to 0.75 in March ;-)
I have the new GMT coke and 50th sea-Dweller ordered and I guess they will go up >20% on day one.
Good times :-) if you get the allocation.

I think in fairness to the OP if you are living in the south east on a fairly modest wage, even a decent wage, the 1st rung of the housing ladder is so far out of reach that it's not even aspirational. So instead of putting disposable income into an ISA at bugger all return, why not get a Rolex... As it might do as well as a savings account.I'll repeat again. But yeah watches are not investments, even with man maths, even a sub is not a good investment. I think a lot of people see what dealers sell watches for and think that is the value.
