Foam double sided tape should do it. Attach the lettering to one side the tape - you can use double widths if needed - leaving the other side of the tape with its protective backing strip attached - place on a flat wooden surface or similar, and use a very sharp knife to cut around the lettering. Then peel off the backing strip and attach to the boot. You get only one shot at this - so best to do some dummy runs and use masking tape to outline the position of the lettering on the boot lid.

When you discover how fiddly and time consuming it will be to get the tape cut perfectly, I think you may find that the 40 quid is well spent.
