CAT D Gen 2 997

Having a quick browse for any new 997's this evening and came across this gen 2 C4S which is at a salvage company.
Never had a CAT D car before or considered it but this does seem cheap even with the damage, market value for a normal one would be in the region of 45k with the upgrades this one has.

Got me thinking that if this could be bought for 20-21k how much would it be to put back on the road, engine wise there should be no issues. The company have said everything mechanically is fine except the obvious (radiators), chassis is perfect etc. Basically leaves wings, bumpers, light, 1 possibly 2 alloys then body & paint work.

I have a friend who owns a body shop so I get cheaper than normal rates plus he is insurance approved and very good. A good condition second hand front bumper can be picked up for around £180, I presume similar with the wings then new rads etc. If this could be put right for around 5-7k using some good condition used parts it would make a cheap car.

Long term value will always be affected but if your getting it cheap enough to factor this in then it should balance out.

I think you will need a lot more than you think looking at the photos.

4 x wheels & tyre - £2500
Suspension - £1000 absolute min
New dash - £1500
Airbag - £350
Whole front end - £2500 min
Rear quarter repairs - £1000 per side
Sill repair - £500ish
Rest of paint repair - £3000

That's what I can see. All the other sensors etc that will have got damaged could easily add a couple more grand.
A lot off effort for little to be saved imho

No chance to repair for 5k to 7k.

Car needs to be c£15k tops which is probably what they overpaid for it.

Multi function wheel too.

Wouldn't be so sure about it.Have a look at DFI engine and its complexity. Any impact would surely cause some damage in components imho?

Cars such as this are written off for a reason. Avoid unless you can get secondhand parts cheap and the labour is your own ie FOC.
On the basis it needs a dash and airbags, it'll most likely need an airbag ecu too and that'll need coding to the car. Lots of potential for hidden costs here ....

Unfortunately, a 'Cat D' will always carry a stigma that will haunt it at re-sale.

I think provided you get an inspection done,its worth punt if it's for long term ownership.
If you write off ,£3-4 k a year for depreciation,then 5 years down the road it stands you on at mid £20ks.
It will always sell for that.
Even the ropiest gen 1 997 is north of £20k and I would prefer this gen 2 to a gen 1
