I suggested 2014ish Focus but tales of dodgy dual clutch gearboxes have put him off. Anything else? He's in no way concerned about speed, handling etc. Hyundai I30? A lot rarer though.

Whether you are a car person or not, the Pulsar has to be worth a look. To the non car nerd, it's safe, reliable, well equipped and has a decent sounding brand name. To the petrol head, it handles sweetly and doesn't look too bad. For a nearly new motor, it's great.

You could send them to the Kia dealer if the 7 year warranty appeals.

There was an article in the guardian the other day about loads of Nissans with this engine going pop. And as all of our company cars are new qashqai's ans Juke's I'm not surprised.

The 1.5 dci is supposed to be good though!

Ah Prius, I'd completely missed that. I'd been searching for 'petrol' on Autotrader etc. They do seem to hold their value though.

And is the VW/SEAT etc. DSG box OK?

Another vote for the boring but reliable Honda Civic.
