I'm in between cars and need a runabout for a few weeks/months, maybe longer. Looking for an estate between 1500-2500....what would you go for?

Audi? BMW? Mercedes? Skoda? Something Japanese?

It's not like there's a paucity of choice.

German ideally. But open minded, something reliable, though not sure if something reliable exists at this price point.

At that price, whatever's working.

If I had a choice it'd be a mondeo like this: www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/ford/mon...

Although if it wasn't knackered, an old E class (prior to the quality degradation caused by sales/accounts taking control of the company in the late 90's/early 00's) is an interesting idea: www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/mercedes...

How big? Plenty of Mondeo estates about means prices aren't too bad. Octavia generally gets you newer for your money than most of the competition.

Forget BMW, mostly overpriced rusty crap at that level frown (I know because I am looking for one)

Go for something unloved IMHO - Saab/Volvo estate? Saw a mint 9-5 Aero estate with all the trimmings, sensible mileage, serviced and FSH for £1500 the other day.

Volvo V70. Big comfy heated seats and a 5 Cylinder engine. There's no better way to transport a dog. Or a wardrobe.

As long as you are handy with a MIG welder.

This cost me £1,200 and I loved it. Was a 2006 Saab 9-3 1.9tdi (150bhp) with 140k on the clock. The only thing that gave away it's mileage was the gearbox as it felt a little tired (probably needed an oil change!), the rest of the car really didn't feel it's age though. Also, I think they look cool, have all the right features and have plenty of character.

Only reason I sold up was that I wanted an auto and fancied another Merc.

At that price he'll get a later one which don't rust so much due to a sill redesign aiui.

Mate of mine just sold one of these (FiL passed away) for a grand, 2002, 120k, immaculate one owner. Was very tempted to make him an offer myself. Spend the rest of the budget on a holiday, no need to spend another grand on top, won't get you much more car.

An E46 Touring any day.
Bought mine (2001) a couple of years ago for £1300 and it had every toy imaginable for its time. Leather (fairly uncommon in the 320D), PS2 and two televisions, parking sensors, CD changer, amp etc.
Unfortunately the engine went at 240,000 miles so no shame to it. I'd love to get a 330D Touring at some point.

Paid 1k for my XC70 in similar circumstances. Turned my head to Volvos.

Plenty of cars less than £1000 can be reliable....
