Do you mean the microfilter? If so, look at the maintenance section on www.bmwe34.net - there's a pictorial replacement guide on there.
For LHD, mind, but RHD ought to be similar enough.

Don't forget this is a US site so when they refer to removing the glovebox it's for a left hand drive vehicle. On a UK car you need to work from the drivers side.
I have just done a pollen filter on an e36 and almost made the same mistake when getting instructions from a US site. Thankfully I also saw instructions on e36coupe.com, a UK site, which saved me pulling the wrong side of the car apart.
