Hi All

The Porsche specialist I service my car with has advised I get the following maintenance items done. Appreciate your thoughts on: (1) which ones you view as essential (obviously tyres and brakes will be getting done) and (2) pricing quoted. Thanks!

QUOTE

Engine lid struts are weak: (engine lid doesn’t stay up by its self) £42 + VAT

Slight leak from RMS/IMS in between engine and the gearbox – This is the bit we’ve cleaned off and we will keep an eye on in future services.

All six ignition coils are starting to crack and corrode (just due to old age and where they sit right next to the exhaust) £192 + VAT

To be honest if and when one of them next goes we will end up replacing them as a set, problem solved then!

The front brake discs are pretty badly corroded on the inner edge, when the pads next get low and the warning light comes on you will have to have brake discs + pads £350+ VAT

All tyres are wearing a bit unevenly – recommend four wheel alignment £180 + VAT

Play in both front lower arm centre bushes ideally recommended to be done as a set (all four) – not really an MOT fail but makes a big difference to the handling of the car and stops a lot of annoying creaks over bumps. £750 Inc. VAT if we go down the aftermarket route.

Lastly the O/S back box is starting to split at the seams, id say you’ve probably got a year before you have to start thinking about changing it depending how next winter is!

I think you're dealing with a decent crew here, but there are probably ways of getting the work done a little more economically.

If you go on to Euro Car Parts you can enter the items that need replaced and see parts prices:

e.g. coffin arms and tuning forks (the LCAs) come in at £350 for both sides, so £750 including labour and VAT is possibly a bit steep.

You'd want an alignment done after changing these parts anyway, so there might be some saving there. It only says there is a little bit of uneven wear, so you may not need to replace tyres at this stage.

You can hold fire on the brakes until the warning light as suggested - or ECP has Pagid brakes and pads at £128 - quote of £420 inc VAT looks high in this light. This is an easy DIY.

Coil packs should be done - otherwise you'll end up some day with the engine sounding like a bag of spanners, the engine light on and that awful feeling that something catastrophic has happened! The price on this is fine - a set of coils is £160, so £230 fitted inc VAT is reasonable.

You could try getting the back box welded to hold back further damage - 'old school' exhaust fitters do this quite often.

It would be worth maintaining a relationship with a mechanic like this; he is on your side and is aware of the issues where maintenance is needed now and what can wait.

If he's happy to fit parts you supply, go to ECP and get them. If not print out the order and show him.

It's a much nicer way to drive if you know that a steady programme of maintenance is keeping your car running, handling and stopping properly, rather than waiting for something to go wrong and paying more for the repair. Also - with steering and braking, you really don't want to learn the hard way . . .
