In the summer I am doing a charity event that involves buying a car for max £1000 and then driving it from North London to Monaco http://pandora-events.co.uk/pacs1drive/)

The problem is, what to buy! I want a fun to drive car thats a bit of a classic. Its going to be through France in mid summer so any kind of convertible definitely a plus. My first thought was a Toyota MR2 T bar, but my friend has already sneaked out and bought one for the race so I need something different. Im struggling though. Maybe a Alfa Romeo Spider? Or a Mitsubishi FTO (front wheel drive Arghhhh)?

What are peoples thoughts? What would you buy? Love to hear what people think

Biased as I'm a huge fan but omega 3.0/3.2

Quick enough comfy and can be bad for well under half your budget

Never thought of an Opel. I imagine a great runner but not big in he looks department!

I want to get a car that was retro cool when i was growing up (I'm 43 now), a chance to relive my teenage car dreams redface), hence the MR2 as an initial thought!

Has anyone any experience of the Alfa Romeo Spider or the Mitsubishi FTO?

There must be loads of cool cars ive forgotten about over the years, please help!

How about a Celica MK7?
There's a couple on Autotrader within your budget.

I bought a supercharged, rear wheel drive, 6-speed manual Mercedes coupe for £900!

Yes, really - it's a little 180 coupe, with 120000 miles and drives really well and has proved super reliable too.

Rear drive convertibles upto £1k... MX-5, MR2, MGF or TF, 3 series or Z3, SLK or CLK. On Autotrader, those are your options. That is it.

On PH classified, there's this - http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/n.... Needs an MOT, and its a T-top not a full convertible, but its definitely something different!

MGF / TF or mk3 MR2 for roofless fun or Lexus GS300 for a bit of barging.

Alternative alternative - a soft top 4x4 like a Suzuki or a LR Freelander. Because who needs roads hehehttp://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Just putting it out there as an 'anything but FWD' option smile

Two thoughts:

1) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vauxhall-Carlton-Limousi...

look at that bad boy

2) Please dont decide to trash it/banger it at the end. I know its very common, "give it a proper send off" etc etc but its a shame to do that to any car when there's no need

More thoughts:

1) Don't rule out FWD. You're traveling in a straight line on a lot of autoroute, not tackling an Alpine Pass. Go for nostalgia by all means but comfy seats will count for as much as handling here.

2) Cheap and Japanese is often a good combo but you could go for something quirky and French to suit the trip. Vel Satis, anyone?

3) You could probably get a nice IS200 MK1 for less than £1000.

4) A car with a big boot might help you bring back more alcohol For Personal Use when you're coming home than an MR2 will. wink

5) I wouldn't trust a £1000 petrol Freelander to get me to Kent, let alone the South of France.

EDIT: I've jsut seen the T- Bar too. Good shout!
