24 mpg on the commute loses the amusement value when you actually have to pay for it.

So, for the less than the price of a pair of rear tyres, a '05 Yaris 1.3.
113k miles.

Engine and gearbox seem good.
Bodywork 'tired'.

Will get it on some ramps this week and see exactly how bad it is.

Small update. There's water getting in either the back nearside door or the boot. The rear wiper doesn't actually touch the screen at any point. The suspicious stains have come out of the seats, but not out of the carpet. There's more room inside than you'd think. The tyres are dreadful.

I've put a tenner of fuel in it.

I've cleaned the inside. I'm telling myself I won't do any more than that, but I've also bought a headlight restoration kit. And a keyring for the keys.

My peers are already mocking me.

Water in the boot is coming in via the light clusters. Unplug the connector, undo the nut and lift out the unit. Dirt gets under the gasket and lets water past. Clean all the dirt off and refit everything. Toyota dealers can sell you mproved gaskets for a price. Only the right hand one on mine leaks. I haven't yet greased Mr Toyota's palm for the better ones

My sister used to have a 1.3 SR, which she drove like a nun. I'd borrow it from time to time and make sure the VVT was thoroughly working

It's been on the ramps. They've just called me to say it wants a pair of rear tyres and a handbrake adjustment - both of which I knew about.

Everything else looks straight. I may have got lucky here...

I have treated the Yaris to new brakes, as I like to stop occasionally.

This means it now owes me about £500 all in. If we assume 10p a mile for the snotter, and 50p a mile for the Merc, I need 4000 miles out of it to break even.
MOT is due in June, which is pretty much when I'll expect to have done 4K. If it passes an MOT, I'll service it.

A very quick test drive suggests it goes ok.

First commute tomorrow. New wipers and mats are in the post.
Anyone got any recommendations for Bluetooth/FM transmitter type things as I have no DAB or AUX in.

I've done the same for different reasons amd slightly different car (suzuki ignis) car owes me less than £500 excluding tax,fuel and insurance. Bought it on 98k miles now jisttickle over 113k in 12 months. Apart from consumables nothing has gone wrong. Can't beat these old Japanese shopping carts!

I have an Aygo for the station run, like little tanks these Tototas! Buttons to run and reliable.

It also makes the Elise feel like a rocket... the Aygo is one hell of a performance mod!

I had one for a few months. £250 through work. Probably the cheapest 'straight' Yaris in the UK!

2001 51 1.0 GS with spoiler and alloys.

Great little car to buz around in. Mine was the 1.0 which was incredibly weak at the bottom end...but incredibly mental at the top end! Handling didn't match up though, it was more of a comfy thing than a sporty thing.

The car looked in better condition that it was, it had done 125k miles and was pretty tired inside and mechanically. Nice little car though. Sold for £350 a few months later.

Mines been crashed. Repaired. Crashed again. Gone round the world 4 times.
Still sound and drives pretty well.
