Trouble-free What Car £6k
Discussion
A mate has asked for advice on a car purchase as an upgrade from his 1.4tdi Polo which is a real state. He is as vague as anything - no real preference for anything in particular either.
His previous car was a 1.0 Micra, so anything he buys is going to be much much more refined / quicker / better equipped at this money.
His cars have never given him much hassle hence the desire for something "trouble free". His last diesel was purchased because he was doing around 18k per year - this has now dropped to just 10k so I've suggested a petrol car might be a better bet.
He has shown an interest in the Skoda Fabia, Honda Civic and Seat Ibiza, all of varying "cooking spec" 1.6/1.8 petrol engines. He's convinced the lowest mileage model with the lowest insurance / tax is the best way to spend his money - I'm not so sure.
Any suggestions of things that will suit his limited criteria but are perhaps just a little bit interesting?!

Going to take this one for the team and suggest £6k could get you a not awful new leased car for 3 years? Fabia 1.0 can be found well within that range. Will admit the 1.0 has hardly any power being squeezed out of it so the 1.2 TSI would be a better bet but no idea what it can be found going for.

Less OAP than a Jazz, will be cheap to run and still looks modern and fresh. I had a type R one of these and it was the cheapest car to run I have ever owned despite the fuel consumption.

I came on to post that, but I think the OP's mate might think it a little too warm considering what's already made it on to his list.
It's surprisingly economical. Unfortunately that deal is gone but the sirocco r is available for a little more I believe. I reckon Jan and Feb this year should see some cracking deals. The insurance on my Jazz isn't massively cheap and nor is the tax, it is a great car and baffles me why it doesn't get the recognition it deserves on here. Currently showing just over 50mpg on this tank full and showing 48 over the last 8000 miles, most of which are around town. I'll stick my neck out and say they are a better car than the Civic, but your friend will need to drive one to make their won mind up. If he wants trouble free, they will be just that, just get it serviced. Honda do charge a kings ransom for them and their is no spare wheel and make sure you get the code for the radio!
Parents have had Skodas since 1980 and currently have a Fabia that's about 12 months old and don't like this one, it's always bonging at them, which they don't like. The last one was a Monte Carlo which they were indifferent to because of the ridiculous wheels that gave a very hard ride, but they loved their 1.9TDi, which was about a 2008 model. They loved that car.

I think its because, like the micra, its often a Sunday driver dwaddler machine.Parents have had Skodas since 1980 and currently have a Fabia that's about 12 months old and don't like this one, it's always bonging at them, which they don't like. Thanks for the suggestions. Yes indeed, for someone who I grew up with playing Gran Turismo he sure has a relaxed attitude towards driving! He is a very slow driver, but nice and safe I suppose!
The Hybrid isn't a bad shout. It's going to go against the grain of his current mindset which is anything with more than 30,000 miles is 'old' and won't last. When questioned him about how long he intends to keep the car he replied "Dunno, about 8 years I guess?" - I think this is somewhat naive.
I tried the leasing argument, but not having ever leased a car myself I'm not the best person to persuade someone down this path. He has already got the £6k saved-up, so can buy a car outright straight away and save for a mortgage. He wants to avoid a monthly bill - even though I've explained the advantages behind maintenance bills etc. and should anything go wrong with his 5-year old, £6k car, he's going to have to fork out to put it right.
Unfortunately years of what we would probably refer to as shed'ing have brought him this far and he's happy with his lot. A Polo which has cost £1800 to buy and £1200 in maintenance over 4 years has cost him very little to own!

A quick Google reveals that anything by Lexus (surprise, surprise) tops all the reliability tables.
On that basis, I'd recommend he puts his £6k into the best Lexus IS he can afford, petrol or diesel.
This one looks good at £5.5k, and will never, ever break.
