Very soon I have to give back a Toyota IQ I have borrowed from a family member that is used for circa 15k miles motorway duties to work and back (65 miles round M25 commute).

Currently have a BMW m240i for weekends and generally non work related duties so not looking for any thrills other than reliability and general comfort at a 70mph cruise on the M25.

Looking at my current options I can't decide whether to find a cheap lease (£100/month) or buy something with larger miles that won't be smashed by depreciation. Looking to move closer to work in the next year or two so would be a short term solution.

main restrictions are insurance (I'm 23) and tax bracket, fuel is no issue as I have fuel card for work.

Ideally want something slightly larger than IQ, maybe even small crossover - but budget needs to be less than £5k if buying outright.

Any example figures would be really helpful or general ideas on what to go for.

Oh and Happy New Year!

Crossover?

Do what I've just done and buy a Dacia Duster. £9500 brand new (HP/bank loan rather than leasing) - reliable daily transport for the foreseeable future for buttons.

given you spend time on the m25 i'd be adding automatic to your list.

With used car prices and garage bills at the moment, unless you have cash to buy something without finance you basically need to be going 8-10 years old to save anything meaning full over leasing something new.

Never thought of the Duster, sounds like a great option!

Is it worth going for the diesel in your opinion? And how do you find it performs on the motorway?

Mine is on order but I found the 1.6 petrol engine perfectly acceptable at motorway speeds.

would be a nice luxury, although finding it hard to find something decent in the price range with an auto.

Saying that my p&j is an auto, so have enjoyed having use of a manual just to stay handy with three pedals.

FYI you can lease a Civic for 9+23 £120+vat with 15k/yr allowance.
Or a 5/6yr Civic diesel is in budget - economical, decent performance too.

Why aren't you using your 2-series as a daily? Am I missing something? boxedin

This. It's the perfect car for it, surely.

I did wonder why you are not using the m240i daily. My brother in law uses his m235i daily and it is comfy enough. They are very nice cars, but not something that is to be stored away.

Or is it the insurance? Mileage limit?

Using the Beemer would be much cheaper than buying, taxing, insuring and running a 2nd car I reckon.

I had a similar conundrum recently. I needed a small Fiesta/Clio size hatch. I was looking at buying second hand at the £5-7k and up to 5/6 years old. Once I'd factored in depreciation, maintenance costs, road tax and then the hassle again of selling it on it made sense for me to go for a lease deal on a new Fiesta ST Line. The cost over 2 years is circa £3.5k.

No mileage restrictions etc on the Beemer. Just the issue of my job involving driving to building sites, potential for a total annual mileage of 25k +(which would trash cars value) and a general preference to have a car I don't have to worry about. totally agree with your point if I did 15k/year total.

Not driving your car to retain its value is like not banging your girlfriend to keep her tight for her next boyfriend.

Which over the course of the lease is over £190 per month. That's still cheap for the miles but a lot more than the £100 per month the OP wanted.

To be fair though, £100 a month on a lease is pretty unrealistic, especially at the mileage quoted.

I'd go down the route of finding a low mileage rep mobile it won't lose loads & you can run it until it drops also when you're on site you won't worry about it.

Here are a few auto examples:

2009 Insignia Exclusive 50k FSH

2008 Mondeo Ghia 59k FSH

2009 308 GT 59k FSH

2009 Insignia 59k FMDSH (new clutch & flywheel fitted) nicely under budget

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

2007 Mondeo Zetec 57k FSH again well under budget.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Or you could get one of these which is basically the Megane R26 but with a diesel engine fitted so only 175bhp (but nearly 270 lb/ft to play with) rather than the 230bhp for the petrol version, Renault didn't make many but it would be a fun steer whilst still dealing with the commute.

2007 Megane RS dci 40k FSH

Plodding round the m25 and no bothered about fuel cost.
What you want is a nice s-type jag for about 3 or 4k. That should get you a really nice one. Will probably be cheaper to insure than you think.
