New 991.2 for daily driver - but which?
Discussion
I currently have a Macan Turbo PP which has replaced a Macan Turbo for which I sold a lovely 997 C4S. Reasons - kids getting bigger and didn't fit so well in the back of the 997 any more; thought I should have a car that fit the dog in it; job started involving longer commutes of about 3 hrs a day one week a month - practical reasons. Macan Turbo is a truly great car of its type and does the job well. But I really miss having a 911 in the garage.
So I'm thinking about ordering a 991.2 to run alongside the Macan. But which? When I had the C4S I really liked the security of having 4wd on a frosty early morning when I was using the 997 as my only daily so I could go for one of those again. But on those kinds of mornings I guess I would be in the macan. That makes me think I should go for a carrera s and save the extra £5k (although lose the rear light bar which I love). But I also really like the look of the Targa (which would give me 4 wd and a wide body) - although I think the rear seats are so highly compromised even my youngest kid would complain about them. And perhaps I should just grab an early build slot for a GTS and skip 4wd but keep the widebody. But I've never driven a GTS of any type so I'm a bit nervous about that. And as I go mad on the configurator a C4S comes out at about 112, a Targa the same, even a C2S is almost impossible to spec below £100k. And a lot of the reviews tell me that a base Carrera is the sensible pure choice.
Basically I'm all over the place. Tell me, wise people, what are your thoughts?
Not many 991.1 GTSs around. Well, loads of white ones but I don't do white. The only couple of good ones are 2015 and about £97k - I would rather spec something new.
I have heard rumours that the 991.2 GTS is imminent - OK it is almost certainly going to be a turbo not NA but that might be a good complement to the stable, no?

I thought I might get some help about which new 991.2 carrera to buy. I should have guessed the answer for some would be "go NA or go home". Most helpful.
I drove ~1200km in a 991.2 Targa 4S and am now in the market for a 991.1 GTS. While I loved the looks of the targa, I don't want the extra weight day-to-day and I prefer NA to the turbos - but this is a personal preference, the turbos were a huge thrill and hugely enjoyable to drive, it's just that I prefer the NA engine response and driving style. I haven't driven any other 991.2s but if you do prefer the new generation then I would highly recommend the Targa BUT you will need to check the seat clearance for your kids as with 18 way seats and my driving position there was only a couple of inches or so between the seat back and rear bench.

If you'd actually asked a decent question you'd get a decent answer - basically asking "which new 911 should I buy" is far too broad. It's like asking which pizza topping should I order.I thought I might get some help about which new 991.2 carrera to buy. I should have guessed the answer for some would be "go NA or go home". Do some more research and self assessment then come back if you need more opinions on specifics.
Tricky question. I've just bought one as my daily (and only) car. I went for a C2S as not a fan of soft tops/targas, at least not in a car that has to be driven every day, left in car parks etc. I didn't go for a C4S as I prefer 2 wheel drive plus it's cheaper! I suspect the S isn't necessary, certainly with my driving and I've also read that the Carrera is very good. But I still chose the S... Probably no help at all but good luck with whatever you go for

GTS will (if past performance can be relied upon) depreciate much more slowly than most other models.
They usually seem to be in great specifications for enjoying a 911, which is what I believe you want?
So although it may cost more initially, it will lose less in the long run, so 'costing' less overall.
Would be my choice.

Agreed trying the different options usually has the biggest impact on your decision of all. I'm personally a big fan of the wider bodied cars as I think they look much better. I personally have a 997.2 turbo cab so I can hardly claim to be a purist but if I did want a pure 911 I would go N/A. I'm still not sure about the Targa image I think it looks a bit gimmicky. Personally if you're leaning towards N/A I would go 991.1 GTS or if you're ok with turbo I'd go 991.1 turbo.
I'm in a similar dilemma as I want to upgrade sometime this year from a 981 Boxster GTS to a 911, I've always wanted a 911 but never been able to afford a new or nearly new one before. I would prefer to buy the latest 991.2 as the relaxed low down torque of the turbo appeals to me, and from what I've seen and heard in reviews it also has the F6 sound and character too (OK, it may have lost a bit of that but I don't mind) and likes to be revved when I'm in the mood. I've yet to drive one - test drives are my next step.
I'd want a coupe (not keen on the 911 convertible looks) and the S, but C2S or C4S is a difficult one, I suspect the C2S would be all the car I would ever want, but somehow the 4S rear design with the slightly wider body and the light strip appeal to me. Is the extra traction of the 4S really noticeable on the road? In the wet would I really be pushing hard enough for it to be of much benefit to me? I drive briskly but I don't push my luck - try to drive too near the limits on the road and you'll come unstuck sooner or later.
Another consideration is the imminent arrival of the 991.2 GTS, it will be priced close to £100k I reckon so say £115k with options - that is £5-7k higher than the C4S cars I have built on the configurator.
Hmm... decisions!

If you're speccing an "S" to within £10k of what a 991.2 GTS will probably cost, can afford it and wait you're mad not to do it. You'll then be able to go wide body with a 2 (if you want) have slightly more power, have a slightly sportier drive plus a car that will feel that little bit more special all round especiallyif you go with that GTS interior. It will also hold its value much, much better than than an "S" so despite the upfront cost will actually be cheaper to own. Unless you push the car really hard or live somewhere where 4 wd will be a real asset in winter I doubt you'll ever really need the 4...and if you do live somewhere where that's a real concern I'd be investing in winter tyres before 4wd. Sure a 4 grips better in the wet but 4wd makes f
k all difference to braking distances and that is a massive consideration in the wet ! A 2 with winter tyres in the wet will grip very well and once it gets cold a 2 on winter tyres is a much better car than a 4 on summer tyres. Edited by Cheib on Friday 6th January 14:31

I agree 100% about the winter tyres - no good having extra traction but no brakes! I have a RWD BMW which I fit winters on and its brilliant in slippery conditions, I can drive with confidence and more importantly can stop as good as anything else on the road.Unless you push the car really hard or live somewhere where 4 wd will be a real asset in winter I doubt you'll ever really need the 4...and if you do live somewhere where that's a real concern I'd be investing in winter tyres before 4wd. I'm pretty certain I won't get winters for the Porsche as it's not a DD, but if there is a good deal on a wheel and tyre set who knows as it does make an improvement in all low temperature conditions icy or not.
Thanks for your input - I'm convinced a C2S will do all I want - but that wide body looks great from behind... have to see how things progress and what options I have. I'm hoping my BGTS will fetch a good trade in price as OPC's are selling them at pretty much what they were new.
The GTS is a no brainer if price isn't ridiculous and availability is not too long a wait. I read somewhere that all 991.2 cars have a longish waiting time this year, but I haven't asked OPC's myself.
I know "my" OPC has had problems with delays on deliveries in Q1...worth checking how many names your OPC has down for GTS (when announced) or S currently. There's been nothing concrete on when the 991.2 GTS will be announced...GT3 is pretty much nailed on for Geneva and Cayenne is seemingly being announced in Q3. if they've already got three or four names down for GTS that might make your mind up as that could mean a new GTS is a decent amount of time away.
Glad you agree about the winter tyres
I'm currently in the Swiss Alps with my X5 on winter tyres...fresh snow yesterday so the resort roads are snow covered. It's mental that people who live in areas prone to snow don't use them.
