Hi all,

Why is the speedo ocillating and not stable at times.
I think it is stable at constant speeds but ocillates a lot under hard acceleration.
What is the fix for this?
Thank you

What car have you got - we need to know if it is a recent one (driven by a sensor on th erear drivers wheel) or an older one - either cable driven or electrically from a sensor in the side of the gearbox?

It is a K-Series of the year 99. It is a cable operated one, but something is definitely wrong with it because the nut securing the cable on the speedo cannot be screwed on the speedo (as if the nut is different size than the thread on the speedo).

Have you changed the cable recently? How long have you had the car?

I bet it can, but the cable is not allowing it to go on straight so it can be done up.

Hi Sorry for the slow reply,

I have the car for less than a month.
I dont know the history but it seems the faster you go or the faster you accelerate the more the speedo is ocillating and the greater the deviation from true speed. (as if the cable is spinning inside the speedo ?)

It sounds like you have a cable drive to the speedo. It could be that the cable needs lubricating - if they dry out the cable sticks a bit as it turns, resulting in the speedo speed dropping when it sticks and glen overreading as it catches up when it unsticks.

It could also be loose at the back, but that would more likely result in the speedo not working at all. The jerking of a sticking cable may have loosened the fastening.

Thank you Steve

So it is a matter of taking the cable out of its surrounding sleeve greasing it and puttig it back in right?

Yes, greasing the cable is the place to start (or buy a new one, but greasing is cheaper). If that doesn't fix it then we'll try the next step.
