Cycle Clothing layering

Looking to refresh my cycling wardrobe as its a couple of years since I bought anything.

Interested in what people are doing for layers in colder weather. I'm pretty much talking about the majority of uk weather as below 14 degrees, i'm into leg warmers and looking at 3 layers (merino base/SS Jersey& basic gilet with nanoflex arm warmers) Could do with getting some long sleeve jerseys, and maybe another gilet or 2 (maybe another thin one and a one for cold weather). I could definitely do with some options alternative options on top.

I usually get Morvelo stuff as I love their bibs and jerseys, and they do some thermoactive long sleeve stuff. Also interested in what people reckon of DHB lately? Bought a couple of their stuff about 5 years ago when I started back into it but looking at the stuff now, it looks like quality kit yet still at a good price. Looking at their Aeron and ASV range.

All you need are the following

Gabba
Assos windblock coat (851 was good)
nanoflex arms
Lycra legs
long sleeve base merino
Short sleeve base merino
Super roubaix tights


That lot will get you through everything depending how cold it is. I've yet to ride in cold enough temps to need ore than 851/base and Roubaix tights.

Ive not worn a coat, and think that would be too warm for me. Usually a set of nanoflex arm warmers is warm enough. If theres ice on the ground, I'll go on the trainer. I've been down enough with front end slides in the ice to not want to go through hundreds of quids worth of gear. Its keeping the core warm. Just on the note of the long sleeve merino, is that instead of the nano flex on those days where its not warm enough to remove a set but not cold enough to need the thickness of full warmers? Are you wearing long sleeve or short sleeve jerseys with all that?

I only ever use short sleeve gabba, so if its not too cold I'll put it over a long sleeve base. But obviously you want a long sleeve one under a proper jacket. I just went out now with short sleeve base, nanoflex arns, gabba, normal shorts and lycra legs, was fine but wouldn't have wanted to be doing a trundle, needed to have a bit of spirt about it to keep warm

Removable sleeves or gilets I always find very useful.
Ditto leg warmers, even right up to warmest summer months I need to keep my knees covered otherwise they go blue and stiff.

Lots of options, when I go out in the mtb in the car I take a big bag and only choose last minute.
Try and take my own often ignored advice - be bold and start cold.

I tend to run fairly warm on the core, and as it's been a warm (ish) winter so far in the sunny south west, i'm normally in an Under Armor L/S base and a L/S Gabba. I live in Gabbas on the bike, fab bit of kit....... Having tried lots of other things, i always resort back to them. Expensive, but worth every penny ! Gore padded tights, which have done three winters now and are still very good :-) Gore arm warmers under the base layer, and that's me done for most rides !

Still dabbling with various things on hands and feet as that's where the cold gets me the most. Currently riding with some liner gloves and some winter waterproof Sportful gloves and think i may have the fingers now sorted. The toes...... well that's a whole world of pain !

So people are wearing a base and a gabba, rather than a jersey in between? Have Castelli moved away from the Gabba name for the L/S stuff? Can only seem to find the S/S Gabba available.

Yes, Castello have decided the only garment known as the Gabba is the S/S jersey. The L/S jersey is now known as the Perfetto, plus there is the Vest, and the S/S Perfetto, which is a lighter version of the Gabba.

£175 for the Perfetto, wow. I always thought the Gabba's were under £140. I'm looking at alternatives - DHB dont seem to have anything similar, but Stolen Goat have the Orkaan for under £100. Seems to be comparable.

I mix and match from old climbing gear, it all works. Smelly Hansen tops still work as well as they always have. It got me over Ventoux in the pxssing rain and fog, even if I did have to stop and run about halfway down.

I'm a big Morvelo fan as well, their Long sleeve thermoactiv jerseys are my winter staple with a Long sleeve base, wind proof gilet. Gore windstopper with base of really cold, or goretex jacket with thermoactiv and base if cold and raining, but that's properly hot.

Also the new Morvelo fuse jacket is awesome. Windstopper, single base layer and great if you don't apfancy too many layers.

For Christmas I got the new Gore One Active rain stopper, which is 100grammes, fits in a jersey, single layer goretex and its an awesome bit of kit. But eye wateringly expensive..... But happy to receive as a Christmas pressie

Morevelo Roubaix tights or bib knickers are going through their 2nd winter and will easy do another 2 or 3 at this rate as well.

I have 2 pairs of Morvelo bibs and the pads are superb. Better than Castelli and have lasted longer too.
