What Car Conundrum
Discussion
I'll set the scene. I've got a BMW M135i on a 4 year pcp with a 10k/annum mileage allowance. I'm now 27k miles into that.
When I bought it in August 2014, I lived in Edinburgh and walked to work. Fastforward and I'm now living 60 miles from work. It takes me an hour in the car or 2.5 hours on public transport. Long and short is that I need a car to get to work but I would also like a car that doesn't cost me in-excess of £700 a month to do so. Ideally, I'd like to reduce that by about 25%, which means that MPG circa 30-35 and a budget up-to £20k. Naturally, given the way that maths works, if MPG goes up then Budget needs to go down.
50% of my commute, I'm sat in traffic. 30% of my commute, I'm sat in either fast-flowing or stop-start traffic. 20% of my commute is through single-lane roads. Whatever I buy is also going to take two of us to the Alps on a ski-trip. So it needs to be reliable. I'm not starting my ski-holiday on the back of a low-loader.
My priorities are, in no particular order:
- The overtaking power of a saturn 5 rocket.
- As comfortable as my extremely comfy sofa.
- A big stereo.
- >4 cylinders.
- Moderately reliable. Budget of £1k for repairs/running costs/year.
That should be easy, right?
I've also acquired a Golden Retriever called Twisleton. He's 7 months old and weighs about 25kg. At the moment (and for the forseeable future) he goes on the back seat in a harness/seat-belt contraption and he'll be doing the same in my next car. Whatever I get, needs to have space for him and my other half to travel together.
At the moment, I'm considering:
- Jag XK (2006 onwards)
- Range Rover 3.6TDV8
- BMW 435 xdrive thing
- BMW 6 Series
- Jag XJ (2010 onwards)
- Merc GL
Slight wildcard:
- 997 C2s.
Is there anything I'm missing? What would the PH Massive do in the same circumstances?

You mention the XK and XJ, but no XF? Was that by design or by omission?
£20k can get you into an XFR now...and with a few quid left over to subsidise the MPG!

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'd love an Alpina. Unfortunately that one is about 2.5x more than I want to pay.
Happy to look at any form of motive power short of coal tbh.
Like the look of the ovlovs but know next to nothing about them. Any engines/drivetrain issues to be aware of?
