Hi

I am new here and posted this on 'general' yesterday - I think it should have been here - oops!

Anyway, I am sure this discussion has been had before but I am a desperate man so at the risk of repeating a past discussion - can you help me.

Geography not really an issue - I have a car

I have tried talking to various experts and am having trouble being heard - I think its the exhaust noise that has stopped their ears working.

My exhaust is showing signs of splitting on the silencers - so a new one is needed but which one? If I get this wrong it could be a very expensive mistake.

Here is what I want:

UK road and MOT legal
Stainless
Extra BHP is nice to have
Decent soundtrack is nice to have too - BUT (I would use 48 point type here if I could) BUT not at the cost of EML lights coming on, drop in back pressure so engine idles badly, profound deafness or the chance of any other issue or annoyance. (If I want issues and annoyance I will buy another F355 - when you arrive home you never know which bits will still be attached or working.)

I have been told that the manifold on these 3.6s are very good and do not really need changing - is that true or opinion?

What is out there that will give me all of the above?

One last thing - and its a biggie - I am half Yorkshireman and half Scot (so I get to say this) I'm a bit tight! So this has to be a budget friendly exhaust if such a thing exists.

Over to you Gurus .............

A proper Yorkshireman would have the silencer repaired smile

Seriously, the OE boxes on my 996 were starting to let go along the bottom but repaired easily with a fillet of steel being let in along the lower seam. Normal service resumed (for the moment at least!)

LOL - I made enquiries about repairs - haven't ruled that out either.

There was such MASSIVE P-taking in this house and amongst friends (I was reminded of the grip fill repair on the F355) that I decided to seek advice and perhaps part with dosh.

How bad is it, is the exhaust actually blowing? If not, you could just keep on driving until it does.

Anyway I had the Carnewal GT exhaust on my 996, sounds absolutely epic when you put your foot down yet still civilised during normal driving. Very impressive considering it's a non-switchable exhaust. Not stainless though, they're just modded OE boxes.

Hi

It will get through the next MOT but not the one after

Zentrum identified it as a weakness in the PPI they did for me

The way I figure it - if this process takes a year then I have started just in time - if someone tells me they can sort it in a week then so much the better.

Exhausts are very subjective, have you watched any youtube videos as there are plenty of people 'demostrating' their new exhaust. If you hear something you like you can investigate more.

I doubt you'll a make of progress asking for recommendations because of the subjective nature but best of luck.

Might also help if you told us what model you have?

Hi

Yes - Cannot believe I did not state 996 C4 Cab 2003 vintage - must have been too keen with the cut and paste - cutting the model out (Dur!!)

I see a lot of youtube videos - and they all sound lovely

But My primary drivers are:

Legal
No trouble - lights on dash, lack of back pressure leading to idle issues (and other issues)
Stainless

I would love more BHP and a great sound track but life long, legal, hassle free are the main things for me - I cannot get that from youtube

My old 996 had PSE but it was not a factory fit. A previous owner had simply had the standard exhaust parts swapped for the PSE ones but had not bothered with the switch unit, so it was loud all of the time. I quite liked this and it really gave the car character. Over time ( I had the car for over 11 years) the PSE silencers rotted along the seams as they all appear to do and eventually I had to have them changed. Given how expensive the PSE parts are, I made a decision (with the help of my indie) to go for Dansk items. They do a couple of options for the 996 (Sport, Super Sport etc). I chose the Sport option which provided a good balance between usability and sound. Whilst not as loud as the PSE I had, it was still a lovely deep burble at low revs rising to a lovely howl at high revs. Very little drone at motorway speeds too.

Could be an option for you?

Now that is interesting

Dansk was one possibility I had been told was good.

Can I safely assume it did not affect idling emissions etc

Kind regards

It was fine. They were on the car for a couple of years with no issues at all.

If you just change the back boxes it's not going to affect any emissions or dash lights. There are no cats in those boxes.

I've got a pair of 996 (3.6) Milltek silencer cans for sale if you need some.
PM me if you're interested, they are on the floor ready for collection, and brand new.

The Porsche silencers are £2500 for non PSE, or £4500 with PSE, plus fitting so expect a £5K bill if you go down the factory parts route.

You will get a £250/300 bill to fit the new ones too, the old ones will need to be cut off, as all the fixings will be shot.., but if the seams are gone they will start blowing soon and not get any better on their own..!

Too right they will be! I did mine at home but without a Dremel and a pile of cutting discs it would have been impossible. Online advice seemed to suggest removing the boxes complete with body mounting brackets but for the life of me I couldn't make that work. The boxes themselves are mounted to those brackets with two long bolts through bushes so I cut the bolt heads off and did it that way. With all new fittings, remounting was a relative doddle.

I can vouch for the Millteks mufflers and will not affect warning lights. If you are considering the cats, then that is a different story. There are claims that aftermarket systems increase BHP, but would really want to see that on a rolling road comparison. The standard setup is pretty efficient. You're better off throwing money at tyres and suspension for gains in performance.

Any exhaust system is a pig to remove. I seem to remember I removed three bolts in the inner bracket direct to the block and removed them as one unit. Other fittings had to be cut off and use OEM fittings. I bought off a well known indie and they were made of low grade steel and binned.

Hi Slippy.. I didn't get as far as researching Design 911 prices, just quoting what my local OPC wanted to replace them.. non PSE were £1200 a side, and PSE was £2150 a side inc VAT but + fitting/VAT. which is nuts for a 996 14 year old car, and double what they should be, but we know the stealer likes their pound of flesh on factory parts..!
