Just been pondering about this site. Apologies if this has been discussed before (did a quick search).

A lot of people must benefit from PH, whether it be general advice, chit-chat, making friends and meetings, gaining knowledge etc. etc.

Our Ted must get tonnes of hassle from us lot, ("Ted, me piccie won't show!", "Ted, I can't order those tickets!", "Ted, lend me a fiver!". I was pondering over the idea that maybe members could pay a small annual subscription. Anyone could still join for free, of course, but members who pay get could get some sort of benefits: special members area, piccie hosting, whatever.

Obviously, Ted's costs and finances are none of our business, but if there were enough of us willing to cough up, say, £10 or £20 quid a year, I for one would not feel aggrieved for what I think is a grand site, especially if in some way it could help pay Ted back for all his hard work.

Your thoughts?

This was discussed a while ago, I think we kind of concluded that it should remain a free site, as that why we all use the internet.
If we want to support Ted more, buy something from the shop, and click on the banners.

I think Ted is willing to take anonymous donations but decided it’s best not to charge.

I didn't mean it to be obligatory, buy hey, 'twas just a drifting thought, which floated and bobbed on the mind's ocean for a mere moment, before holding its breath and going under for eternity.

I'm all for it. I've met some really nice people on here, and been on a good drive courtesy of them. I've won a competition on here (only the second thing I've ever won, other was 4 numbers on the first week of the Lottery).

I've helped Ted with a couple of server gremlins and I'm always happy to help others with problems with their home PCs.

So yeah, I'd be happy to line the little man's pockets if only for what I've taken out of it.

I have certainly purchased goods and services from many of the guys who advertise on P'Heads, e.g. Zertec, LevenTech, Mod-wise and Peninsula. Often it is as a result of good feedback here that leads people to consider these suppliers. We get good info on what's what and who's who and of course a free site and Ted gets continued advertising revenue, plus presumably the suppliers are pleased to know the advertising works! Rich...

Yes, this has been discussed and everyone (inc Ted) decided that the best way to support PH is by:

1) buying a few stickers, so you can tell the world you are a PHer

2) buying some merchandise in the shop

3) going to trackdays, functions and meets, whether free or paid-for

4) clicking on the banners and links to improve his click-thru rates (surprisingly relevant a lot of them!)

5) keeping on visiting the site and being a useful member of the community

If you wanted to give Ted some cash, you could ask for his trade package - I think this lets you have a fancy jpg by your posts (like joospeed etc.).

Don't feel so sorry for Ted. One day he'll have his Bentley

Cheers

Interesting that you should suggest that - I was looking for a name for it!

I'll emphasises this once again, PH will continue in its current form.

However, I do have a longer term plan to provide some additional features/services (such as piccy hosting and a number of other services/benefits) that people could subscribe to if they wished.

The advertising is going well, but I want to diversify the income streams for a number of reasons including accelerating growth. PH is self funding - no VC giving me lump sums unfortunately - so all new ventures have to be funded from the same pot as pays my mortgage etc. So whilst more dosh obviously means I get to recoup some of my investment and upgrade from beans on toast every day, it also means we can do some more exciting stuff, pay for more articles on the site, organise more events, etc.

This 'bigger and better' phenomenon will be clearly seen in relation to Black Tie and Pie, for example.

This year's event will be fantastic (I *know*), but next year we will have a better idea of numbers and people will know what it's all about. So there'll be dancing bears, aerobatic displays, dwarves juggling chainsaws etc. Probably.

Onwards and upwards, Ted
