991.1 PDK or Manual?
Discussion
I am starting warming into the idea of having a 991 carrera at some point. Now the PDK was apparently improved over the 997 series but think that I would pref a manual tbh.
But what is the story of the 7-spead manuals?
What are the opinions for this gearbox? Is it to busy leaving with it? How come in the 'R' they went back to a 6-spead one?

When the GTS came out Chris Harris among others got their hands on a manual GTS which they felt was a better gearbox than the early manual 991.1's. Whether there were updates to the gearbox I have no idea but worth bearing in mind.
This is a great spec car although probably a tad expensive being at an OPC

Today, now on the UK Porsche Used Locator
194 Porsche 991s for sale across the UK
14 of which are manual
eg 7%
So the real problem is finding the right manual 991. They just sold so few.
I'm in a similar position having put 13k miles on my 997.1 manual and wanting another, younger manual
I just can't think of why I want a PDK, I don't want it.

Dr S is correct, the 991.1 manual is a PDK clone which, in its initial guise, i.e. 2012/13 it wasn't a particularly good gearbox. I'm a manual gearbox groupie but sold my, then new, 2012 991 after a very short period because the 'box diluted the ownership experience so completely, it had to go! Not only was the throw & feel dire, I found it way too easy to stick it into reverse gear, when going for first! Not ideal. Hopefully, a stronger detent solved that at some point on the development curve.
Considering Porsche's penchant for continuous development, I would assume later iterations are better. Indeed, 991.2 7-speed boxes are a quantum leap better cf my 2012 car. In my humble opinion - probably/possibly, due to further major development, & regarding gearing, the increased torque availability at lower revs?

A veritable can of worms, but I owned a 991S with PDK, it's lightening quick but too much like playing a computer game for my liking, the car just lacked the X factor and I put it down to the gearbox though there will be plenty out there who will disagree and I would accept their points.
I am building a very expensive house at the moment so it will be a while until I pop into an OPC, but my next 991 (if the house build doesn't ruin me) will be a manual. HTH
