I am seriously thinking about buying a Gen 2 now in the winter if I see one i like.
I have always sung the praises of club sport cars for resale but I'll be using it on the road as against track so would be looking for comfort seats I think??
I notice from seeing ads from JZM that comfort specs seem to sell just as well as CS cars on all generations of GT3's hence this is making me think a comfort car will still be sellable.

I notice they didn't come with active suspension mounts and this was an option so as I don't know that much about them I thought I would sensibly ask on here first!
Are there any must have options that i should be looking for chassis wise as well as interior wise?

I'm looking for PCM and full leather as it'll be a road car but what are the other must haves for resale?
I notice lots of cars have 4 plus owners and 15- 25k miles and this seems to be the norm. I'll be buying from a reputable dealer or OPC too as I want a good warranty and an over rev check.

I am looking possibly quite a long term keep.

Any advice would be greatly received so please tell me if you think I should be buying a Gen 1 instead!

Cheers

Think I'd want the axle lift.

I'm not sure that a lift is essential - assuming you don't have a very sharp, steep drive to negotiate it shouldn't be a problem. The splitter will get scratched from time to time but they're not expensive and can be replaced in about ten minutes. There are two deflectors underneath that do wear but they are the cheapest Porsche part you will ever buy at around £6 a pair.

Dynamic engine mounts - if you're not doing lots of trackdays then I wouldn't worry.
Cruise control is pretty useful for keeping legal in average speed camera areas etc
Seats - you'll find arguments for and against all types so just find the ones that your comfy with!
Bose etc - why would you listen to the radio when you have that engine to listen to and apart from that the things are so noisy that you can hardly hear the radio....
Navigation - looks nice but a TomTom does the same job and takes UK postcodes
Sports Chrono thingy - got it, never used it
Carbon Ceramics - better for road than track use because of cost to replace but standard iron brakes are pretty good so shouldn't be a deal breaker

They're all fantastic cars and I think they are great value compared to the price of 997.1 and 997.2 RS models, especially as there are so few of them ( 125 ish in the UK)

I think everybody wants slightly different spec - I would want PCCBs, Clubsport and lightest seats available (lightweight buckets). I would use it mostly (99%) as road car. Preferred colour probably white.

Somebody else might want a completely different spec....

I noticed the comfort seated cars are stuck for sale while many bucket seated cars have sold.

the £108k JZM one took months.

OPC have a few Comfort 997.2 GT3 for sale and non with buckets, says it all.

as for "997 GT3 Gen 2 must haves" the biggest is the RS number after the GT3 mark :-) where you get a proper tuned 3.8, lightweight flywheel and the magic shorter final drive :-)

Dare I say it, should have kept the GT4 as a 1st owner to then pay £110k for a 5 year old 15k miles GT3 is a hard ask.

Great cars though, but I would want Passives, lightweight flywheel, shorter final drive and maybe a new Guards Diff.

I would say club sport / air con and lift is a must...oh and phone prep. Anything else would be a waste of money in my opinion.

I must say they look lovely in white two, good luck with the search.

Isn't the axle lift unreliable and hideously expensive to fix ?

Dealers always make a big deal of axle lift but I've never had need of it. It always struck me as something extra to go wrong and something weighty on what's a lightweight car in theory. I was flexible on the Nav as the old systems are pants anyway.

I do think buckets are great in this sort of car, but I know not everyone's cup of tea. Ceramics seem like overkill given the quality of the steel brakes, but if it's mostly road use and the car comes with ceramics then why not. I wouldn't pay extra for them. Some of the cars come with lots of nice shiny bits of carbon all over the place, but again not a real need and it's not really in keeping with the ethos of the car, but again each to their own.

My desired spec was Clubsport, not white, good condition and that was about it. Ended up with black, Clubbie, no Nav and no axle lift, 9k miles. Some will say poverty spec, I will say purist!

There is only one option you need.

The car.

Everything else is fluff. Go for it!

Checkout USA forums. Cars WITHOUT lift are more desirable and priced accordingly . Very troublesome

I'm certainly no expert but this sounds like good advice to me.

Ha ha ha, I know what you mean!!

I think most of it has been answered above. Given only 125 came t the Uk, I'd buy on condition and price. As you said they are great value at the moment. I went out to play with a mate of mine that has a LHD 997.2 GT3 in pretty much the spec you want. I was in my GT4. The GT3 shat all over the GT4, although the GT4 did pull it back in the twisties, but I had to work hard to stay in touch. Swapping the GT4 for the particular variant is a great move both financially and as a drivers tool in the current market. good luck with the search

Smoking (the tyres) is a standard feature!

I didn't realise there were only 125 rhd cars in the U.K.
How many 997.1'S came to the U.K. ?

Thanks for the replies guys, well most of you anyway!

Spec is what you want it to be.

Buckets has always been GT spec, you want sports seats.
Does not matter what is said really does it regarding must haves, esp if you look at all the GT4 hassle on that thread regarding spec.

I thought numbers were more like 170cars.btw.

Had my 997.2 GT3 for nearly two years and done 15k miles. Personally I find lift well worthwhile and it has given no problems so far. And if it does pack up I expect it to be fixed under warranty. It only lifts the front and takes around 7 sec to operate so can be clicked on and off very conveniently. Maybe not essential but nice to have, especially if you plan to drive on D roads in France where in villages there are now a rash of speed bumps some of which are quite severe. A GT3 without lift will clear them but not without some scraping of the splitter/brake ducts.

Cruise is necessary in my view but retrofitable, circa £500. OPC had an update of PCM to 7 digit post code for around £150. I used to think PCM was essential and had it as a must have when looking for my car but now I have to say for long routes I tend to plan with Garmin Basecamp.

Mine is CS with lightweight carbon buckets. The seats are very much a personal matter but I find them very comfortable indeed, better in fact than the folding bucket type though you do lose a door pocket due to the lack of lateral airbag.

The half cage is a bit of a pain but with care you can still pack plenty of stuff behind it, enough for a two week trip, so I certainly wouldn’t rule out a car that had it fitted.

Mine doesn’t have Sports Chrono but I can’t say I have ever missed it.

I don’t think the box is the sweetest Porsche have ever made and can be quite notchy until the oil is warm but that having been said the action is very positive and reassuringly solid. Some people say the gearing is too long but I like it exactly as it is.

Good luck with the search, the 997 GT3is a special car that will stand the test of time.
