hi many thanks for that, when you say its rough do you mean idiots, trouble, and is this for most of the town or just some bad areas, not really thought of Whitby but will have a look now, also Filey is on our map to research, getting good info of actually what a place is like to live in is quite difficult,

All areas have rough parts - sometimes just a few houses - sometimes a street. Often in some of the new housing areas due to planning requirements to provide social housing. How long is a piece of string.
I would probably describe Filey as being quieter and with a few nice options of streets that might appeal. You haven't stated what sort of property type you might prefer. Although I don't know the area properly I would possibly suggest the Wharfedale area or Fir Tree Drive area. Near enough to walk to the front or town and mature enough to provide reasonably modern property.
Moving to the idea of Scarborough, some nice flats can come up (as they do in Filey) with sea views / near town centre, some with parking / garage. But do you want town area or an outlying village. Even as far as Pickering perhaps - for those that want to volunteer on the Railway. How important are bus routes as you get older - because the service is sadly only going one way. I'm at Ayton and known that side well. Traffic can be bad, and may get worse when Lidl opens on Seamer Road in a few weeks. Parts of Newby nearer town are OK.

Whitby and surrounds are by a significant margin much nicer.

Look at the villages inland edging onto to the NY Moors national park.

Grew up around Ruswarp on the Esk fabulous part of the world. Scarborough is not in the same league.

I worked for the police in Sboro. Wouldn't move there if I were you.
That's based on traffic, tourism and inhabitants!

Whitby feels remote, pretty, but remote.

Filey and Brid seem a little closer to other things.

Inland, Malton, Pickering etc, seem to have access to the coast but are more cohesive, imho.

I bought a lovely apartment there a few years ago as we live in York and used it for weekends. Scarborough is nice if you stay South side, Esplanade etc. Happy to help if you need any advice. Lovely for walking. You just have to be wise where you look.

Wouldn't recommend Brid, rough as hell in the main, lots of drunken Wessies/Comforts, and like most resorts in this country, lots of drug and paedophile types are punted out there.

In no particular order:

Thornton le dale
Pickering
Helmsley
Kirkby Moorside
Malton/Norton
Brompton
Snainton
Allerston
Ruston/Wykham
East Ayton
Osgodby
Cayton
Scampston
West Knapton
Wintringham
Sledmere

Or nearer Bridlington:

Nafferton
Burton Agnes
Wetwang
Beeford
Brandsburton
Leven
Sewerby
Bempton
Flamborough

All nice places i know well, but it really depends on a lot of what you want/expect or require:

-How near you want to be to Scarborough/Bridlington coast
-What sort of house you want/need
-Budget
-Do you mind small village locations or really want a town

There are nice areas of Scarborough, and Bridlington as well (i used to live in Bridlington) my mum still does and My friend lives in Scarborough but as with all places (i mean anywhere) there will always be a % of Rough and not good areas and people.

Just my thoughts for consideration.

Andy

Hi!

We moved to Scarborough in March this year from down south too purchase and run a bed and breakfast (www.thebeachesscarborough.co.uk if you're looking for a base to explore!)

I love Scarborough, we live on the North side and are really happy here. As has been said there is good and bad parts, but nothing compared to where we lived before. If we were here "just" to buy a house and live it would be in the south side of town, or the Old town.

Traffic can be a nightmare, but it doesn't take long to figure out work around, I wouldn't let that put you off!

If there is anything I can help you with, give me a shout.

Avoid the old town part of Scarborough (Castle Ward), that has the highest concentration of smack heads, Trafalgar Square used to be really bad. The South Cliff/Ramshill area is very nice, close to town and the beach. With some decent pubs, shops, take-aways and resturants all in walking distance. Thats where I would live if I chose Scarborough. Indeed I spent three years living there whilst at the Uni.

Whitby is better (better driving roads for starters), but Scarborough is a close second. Filey and Brid are pretty much the same to me. The same problems Whitby and Scarborough have (drugs and unemployment), yet much fewer of the good parts. More so when the tourists stop coming over the winter. Scarborough benefits by being the largest town in the area, Whitby feels nicer and is more idyllic.

Of course Middlesbrough isn't that far from Whitby and has much better shops than Scarborough.

All suffer from being cul de sac's by the coast. If you want to go anywhere, you've first got to travel to York, Middlesbrough or Hull.

THROWING a bit of a curveball, and probably totally Irelevant but I feel lucky to live in richmond, charming market town and nice easy commuting distance to darlington/northallerton/teesside/York, but more importantly we have whitby and the coast an hour to the east, lakes an hour west and Northumberland an hour north.

Thank you for all your replies, we have been following up all your info and it seems almost everyone likes the south side ( Scarb) especially to live ,I have got a few maps and pics of the areas and we can see its a great position and looks stunning, unfortunately no info on pubs, we agreed when we move that walking distance to a local would be on our want list as we have to drive into our village or into Cromer for a drink, like most villages our pubs have mostly gone over to more food and indeed our local has inside a year lost 99% of its locals because a company franchised it from the landlord and ignored them including when the large 3 roomed restaurant was booked they reserved the bar side tables and forbid the locals sitting ( TRUE ) it now will be empty through the winter and the locals just are no longer gathered anywhere for a beer. obviously being retired we dont do clubs but a walk round for a drink is part of retiring for us, a meal out now and then, and we are definitely beech lovers, So the South side is looking good so far, We lived in Falmouth for some tome and I had my name down for a ( Short Hall ) berth for a 6 mtr day boat and finally got it 7 after years waiting ,hope Scab is not that busy for moorings if we go, we are really looking for a Bungalow due to me having an accident (legs not great now ) but modern stairs are not too bad if we found a house, we would be looking in the £210K sort of area 3 beds would be good and we are green fingered so big gardens dont frighten us. Kates a 4 times a week 6 mile runner aroung the villages here as our beech is full of Groins and she cant jump them, Right again many thanks for all your time and info and its all being followed one way or another, if pos more please, and cheers for now avagooden, Alan

Hi, yes dont build many bungs these days but as long as the house isnt too old the stairs are usually not so steep so could be ok, we are following advise and looking on line at Whitby as everyone speaks very well of it and harbours and beeches cant be beaten, so it could be a visit after Christmas to start the ball rolling, so far south side of Scarb and while up there a visit to Whitby at least were moving forward with the search, many thanks and cheers, Alan/Kate

Pub and restaurant wise I'm really impressed with Scarborough too! Our local on the North side is the North Riding Brew pub, the landlord also owns the North Riding Brewery, the beer here is always kept well. In the south side of town there is The Highlander, The Valley and Cellar bar which too have good beer, as does Stumble Inn. In Town I'd recommend the Merchant and Leeds Arms for a good pint too.

Restaurants here are fabulous - just up the road from us is AZ which is a great Turkish restaurant, arguably the best chippy is down the road from us (North Bay Fisheries) we love El Gringos on the South side for some Mexican food, Pomodoro in town is a great Italian, East Coast Kitchen is a great American Diner, Eat Me Cafe is just amazing and so on... Beyond a Whetherspoons, McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, ASK and Pizza Express most pubs and eateries here are independant (and seem cheap!).

One of the great things about Scarborough is everything is walkable, today we've gone from the North Bay, to the Spa, had a mooch around town, a bite to eat at the Clock Tower Cafe - it's superb!

For me Whitby is a bit small, and I think in the two weeks or so we've stayed there we've uncovered most things, whereas we feel we've only scratched the surface with Scarborough. If you're not to live in the centre of Whitby then we found West Cliff just like a generic housing estate. We were very close to buying a house in Whitby though before heading down the B&B route, but in hindsight I'm glad we came here!

Food is actually decent in Scarbs, a friend of mine owns Cowshed Burgers if you're a burger fan which are exceptional. Also my best mate is the chef at The Grapes out Ebberston way and that is also superb.

I'd live on the outskirts if I went back, maybe Malton.

I've walked past Cowshed but I've yet to try it, thanks for the heads up though! I'll check out the Grapes too!

Hi all , this is the kind of info we were hoping for, weve done the house moving all before and most people know moving house is a pain in the A and we know after doing it a few times the most important is as they say Location and as this is our last move needs to be right,I lived in Bradford many years ago and found the people ( and im not saying this to be nice ) were THEE most friendly i had ever met, so that part no worries whatsoever, being retired when we move ( UP NORTH ) we want plenty to do and it seems as your saying Scarb has that enjoy walkaround av a coffee av a pint do a bit o shopping which I know Kate would love. So it looks like a visit is definatley in order and Im looking forward to it, just need to line some houses up to look at to get the feel of the place. many thanks for all this info as I said its what we were hoping for so any info is good another thanks and talk soon we hope. Cheers Alan/Kate

I lived between the South Cliff of Scarborough, and East Ayton, for 13 years. I've moved back to York for 3 years and am missing the sea too much so am heading back to South Cliff again after Christmas.

Scarborough as has been said has its good and bad sides, like any town or city (I could show you some real stholes in York which people regard as being a nice city). Avoid them and it's a nice place to live. Traffic is an issue mainly during the summer holidays but isn't a major issue, plus if you're living there you're usually going against the flow, eg out of town on a weekend when tourists are coming in.

Happy to advise further on Scarborough.
