Are there 'investors' with 100's of Porsches in storage?

I have read a few times the suggestion that there are people sitting on massive numbers of classic Porsches (and others).

Is this true? Are there really storage facilities out there with say, over 100 cars hidden away?

Cam Ingram and Test Ikuzawa probably has the most famous collections. But I think they are less than 100. Ikuzawa's is particularly impressive as he is clearly obsessed by Porsches.

Yep, my car is in one of these units currently surrounded by all sorts of cars owned by different people. I just put mine in whilst having some building work done on the house but I am now tempted to leave it there over winter.

some might buy one or a few max. but I doubt about any single investor to get hundreds of porsches at once! Despite all the noise and bubble, classic cars are not easy to convert into cash rapidly and quite risky in terms of originality or technical issues. I've actually heard a few investors from a hedge fund speaking about how risky to invest into vintage/classic cars.

There are a few dealers in London also provide storage facilities though, due to owners being expats or travel a lot.

100s is a lot but there are many with half a dozen or so. Some call them collectors though. I prefer enthusiast.

saw a ferrari collection, of a 100 cars for sale not so long back, also seen car collections of about 100 cars here in the middle east.

For the seriously rich I think its a possibility, although likely to be more diverse than porsche. I dont think a lot of these people are so worried about the liquidity. :-)

Lots of collectors with far less cars, but all nice, low mileage, desirable models I am sure.

Mine goes into storage today (for winter); the unit houses 140 cars and is an absolutely car mecca, including first gen 911's and Ferrari Daytona's etc. Not a single collector though.

I think the reality is most of the seriously wealthy do not frequent the likes of PH.

Some people somewhere must be buying these cars with enormous price tags, but we never seem to hear from them. I am matey with the owner of a Ferrari / Lambo specialist who has a client there who is currently storing a 918, GT4 and GT3 RS with all under 1,000 miles. He's not even seen the latter two.

Anyone with a 100 cars wouldn't be using a public storage facility....at that stage you'd have your own facility and mechanics etc and thus privacy (if you wanted it). Seinfeld sold part of his Porsche collection last year which was IIRC about 20 cars.

I know someone that owns somewhere around ten 911's as part of his current "garage". He's a genuine car nut rather than an investor though.

I personaly know of a person in Europe who has close to 100 Classic Porsches in his own storeage. I hav'nt seen them but I have reason to believe he's telling the truth.

I seam to remember a 964 up for sale at John Holland with only 80 miles or so on the clock that was sold to a Japanese collector who was an ex racing driver. From memory it joined his vast collection of 911's.

However I could be wrong.

It is very impressive and respect/kudos to the guy for amassing such a collection, but it is kind of sad - no way can he drive them all, so they sit there mainly to look at - would rather see the 100 cars owned by 100 different owners and driven

Agreed, but these are not play things for the rich, they are investments for the wealthy, unlikely to see the light of day for fear of increasing the mileage. The amount of exotics I've seen today with delivery miles is staggering; to the point where even moving them around to get cars in and out is carefully thought out to reduce the meter ticking over!

True, but that is the reality. Pleasure is seen in very different ways. I enjoy driving my cars, but if I could put a supercar in my living room and just look at it, I'd be very happy...but my missus said no!

One Aston specisalist started to quietly collect the "onloved" Aston DBS a few years ago, when they were under £15k. Now a restored one can go for well over £150k, he has done quite well.

I too have visited s few of these storage sites, and some have not moved sicne the 1990s: new Bentley Turbo R, Aston Virage etc with aero miles on the clock. initial cost plus 26 years of storage fees.... perhaps the latter might be showing a return on their investment...
