Seems like these three can be had for similar money these days, each have different strengths and weaknesses but it's tough to decide which one to pick.

Assuming it's a 2nd car, mileage about 6k/pa - which one would you go for?

Always fancied one.

Don't like turbos.

GT4 not 'special' enough for me with its non-motorsport engine.

I guess you need to elaborate on what are your motivations for buying.

Eg: In my view:

Track driving, then GT3>GT4>GT2
Sunday road driving and taking the OH to lunch, then GT4>GT3>GT2
Locking into storage for investment then GT2>GT3>GT4
Daily driver then GT4>GT3=GT2

etc

In that price bracket my choice would be between 997 GT3 and 981 Boxster Spyder. If that 6k a year included track driving it would be the GT3...if it didn't I'd probably go for the Boxster.

I'd be buying purely to enjoy on good days. I may take it on track, but I may not and in any case my talent will definitely run out before the car's capability thats for sure.

I used to own TVR and previously a CSL so compromises with toys/comfort don't bother me but I'm after a decent noise, a "special" feeling when getting in/driving and hopefully decent residuals. All three should give this but need some pro/cons between them.

Clearly you need to try them. GT2 for me, but I love boost!

GT2 is usually considered "top of the tree", no?

For me it would be GT2 > GT3 > GT4, but I'm no expert or mystic.

Nice problem to have :-)

Couldn't speak for the gt2 having not tried one but as a road car, the gt3 is for me a much the better car than the gt4 as it feels considerably more special to drive.

As an occasional/weekend car, GT2.

996 GT2 is truly special and hugely quick. Will need fettling to make it into a nice road car, and whilst you'll not need the legendary £10k refresh one individual on here alludes to, I'm doubtful you'll find a car on the market that's in truly rude health out of the box, so you'll need to factor in some new tyres, possibly a damper refresh, new springs and an expert chassis/geometry set up by one of the well known and well regarded UK specialists (PM me for details).

This may sound a little daunting, not to mention a PITA, but it will be money well spend and give you a massively quick car that's fun to drive, but will still have teeth if you take liberties with it. If you've done the CSL and TVR thing, the GT2 will seem waaaay faster, and if you want more noise, there is a whole plethora of exhausts available.
Combine a decent exhaust (again PM me for details) with a quality bespoke remap for 540-550hp, and you'll have a weapon that'll trounce pretty much anything except some very expensive super/hyper cars AND is analogue and thus fun and challenging to drive into the bargain.

good question, 997 GT3 as long as you go into it eyes open and can spend £10k on it.

not a refresh price as such but one has to look at 2005 cars eyes wide open.

10k for Ohlins , geo, toe links, diff, final drive, flywheel and small refresh parts.

GT4 has a better chassis being mid engine imo, lets not forget you can take these to 430BHp with ease and every thing is new. you only have to look at ring times to see how a newer car is faster with less BHp.

I would go 997 GT3 and spend the money on it to make it a sweeter drive.

but if you were to just spend £85k and not change the GT3 (ie keep it oem) then I would go GT4 and have a new car.

GT2 is a whole new ball game, even older and turbo, so not for me but I see the appeal.

Not driven a GT4, can kind of guess what it'll be like so not overly bothered about driving one.

996 GT2 is an older car now and as such will need some money throwing at it for 6k miles a year - this is what I'd buy though, proper old school 911ness, scary as st if you get it wrong but that's what makes it.

997 GT3 would be my second choice, love them but they always feel a bit slow to a turbo fanboy like me smile

I sold my CSL this year, had a Cayman R replacement. Just didn't cut it, nowhere near special enough. Drove GT4s but then 997 GT3 was instantly more special and recaptured that CSL magic and much more.

GT4 a great £65k car but way overpriced for what it is. 997 GT3 objectively worse but more special in nearly every way.

Never had the pleasure of a GT2.

Cost ? (and warranty well and truly invalidated.....)

At 430hp you're 32hp (and lord knows how much torque) down before even laying a spanner/PC on the GT2. Adding a map and exhaust to the GT2 will see you in a car with horsepower and torque figures GT4 owners can only dream about.

Mid engine doesn't automatically mean better (whatever "better" means ?), and rest assured if you want something that's analogue and tricky to drive fast properly, the GT4 is in no way the "better" drivers car. However if you want modern, easily accessible performance with fancy trim/contrast stitching, a chassis made out of papier mache, EPAS, and a hand me down engine with poorly chosen gear ratios, I'm sure the GT4 is a truly great car. But rare, indefinably special and massively quick in a oohfkinhellthatsseriouslyimpressive way ? sorry not a chance.

Good question. If it were me, id be looking at a GT3 or GT2. The GT4 is a very good car but will not engage or involve on the same level as the 3 or the 2. Power wise, you can take the GT2 a lot further to produce a very fast car. Chassis wise, you can take the GT3 a lot further to produce a well balanced car capable of lapping a circuit very quickly. The GT2 can also be made to lap quickly but It goes about its pace quite differently. For me the sharper throttle response of the 3 would be the decider but if you prefer bhp as a means to speed the GT2 is your car. Both are lovely to drive but require different techniques.

It really all depends on your own driving preferences and the use that you intend - ie road/track bias etc.

As said earlier the 2 and 3 will be older cars so buy on condition with a decent inspection. My 997 GT3 only needed £900 spent on it to make it A1 so don't be put off by horror stories
