Never had one come from Kazaa-Lite.. only ones I ever see come in though the email system...

Depends what you're downloading I suppose - Kazaa's merely a conduit for you to receive whatever some dodgy goon wants to share with people.

Like any file-exchanging, you need to be aware of the caveats.

Kazaa is well know for installing a variety of spyware on your machine unless you are very careful in installing it. This spyware (which you probably don't know is installed) can also be used as a conduit for viruses, trojan horses, keyboard interceptors, you name it.

Kazaa lite is supposed to be rather less prone to these. But in general, if you're downloading maegabytes of stuff of the net from people you don't know, expect a few surprises. (Oxmoron, I know).

Viruses are a completely different thing from Ad-Ware, Spyware etc..

For those, use Lavasoft's Ad-Aware to root out all the shite that gets installed..

that said, I and a couple of others have found Kazaa-Lite to be popping up advertising windows which are being spawned by the core executable, without the existence of any distinguishable spyware getting installed..

Ryan,

All files downloaded off the internet have the potential to contain viruses. Kazaa is no exception to this but due to the sheer popularity of it the chances of recieving a virus are higher than normal. Typically speaking if you are searching for software (be it freeware or otherwise) there is a very high chance on Kazaa that it will contain a virus.

If you are going to be downloading a lot of software (and games seem worse for it due to kids wanting to be hackers) then its highly advisable to use a firewall product and an anti virus product. I personally use Norton Internet Security 2001 (2002 is dodgy), which rather ironically is available on Kazaa! I'd download a good free virus checker first as theres the odd comic out there who infects virus checkers.

Matt.

PS Kazaa Lite is no better for avoiding viruses because all it is is a version of kazaa without the cydoor dll's and a clever host table that excludes certain DNS servers.

doesn't zonealarm solve most of the problems with trojans etc, most of our remote laptop users (outside the firewall) use it.

Its a compatibility thing, but I cant remember what the conflict is, I think it may be something to do with NIS2002 and the Alcatel DSL frogs or maybe NIS2002 and XP.

If it works then its fine, the conflict was so bad for me I had to format and start again.

Remeber that you're transferring files from someone else's computer so if there is a virus on a file, their computer has the virus. I imagine the vast majority of Kazaa users have virus checkers installed so I don't think many viruses go around Kazaa. Having said that, I did get one infected file but that was my own fault for downloading something called 'Over 1000 serial numbers and porn passwords.doc', or something similar.

Just be careful what you download, scan everything you get and you'll be fine.
