Looking for a replacement for our Q7 which sold a few weeks back, and keep coming back to these.

Budget of up to £20k, so just in to Disco 4 HSE and facelift RRS.

We have a 2 & 4 year old, but love the bigger cars with room to ferry us about in comfort.

My brother thinks the Disco is the ultimate family car, but I struggle with its looks.

Not having seen them side by side, is there a huge difference inside space wise?

My Dad has a Sport and I have a D4 and I've spent a good deal of time driving and living with both. We also have two children so in a pretty similar position to yourself. To give you the short answer, get the Disco.

The long answer is that the only things the Sport has over the D4 is the handling is ever so slightly better (although the ride is firmer) and the front headrests are softer. That's it! Of course if you prefer the look of the Sport and prefer a more 'cocooned' cockpit then they can also be plus points (the transmission tunnel sits a bit higher on the Sport which my Dad prefers).

The D4 has three proper seats in the back, the Sport doesn't. The D4 also has seats 6&7 which are also surprisingly big and will take fully grown men comfortably - they do come in handy every now and again. The D4 had a lot more height in the cabin which gives it a bit more of an airy feel. The boot in the Sport is significantly smaller and simply isn't big enough for us, mainly due to the way the boot slopes - a decent sized estate is more spacious. The Disco has a far more neutral image than the Sport, although a nice grey or green Sport with a cream interior is, in my opinion, still quite tasteful.

I would also argue that the Discovery is the ultimate family car, although if you don't like the looks of them then it's all rather meaningless.

To my eyes the Mk1 RR Sport has aged dreadfully and just looks plain old nowadays. I think the D4, however, looks brilliant.

Disco4 without a doubt. My '12 model has not skipped a beat. I'd also suggest a DMS tune for extra urge and improved economy (32mpg).

Drive both. The Disco is an amazing vehicle with loads of space but just too much of a large barge for my liking.

I bought a facelift TDV8 RRS instead. Best all round car I've owned. I love the TDV8 - plenty of torque, enough space to load 2 weeks worth of summer holiday stuff to France for two nippers (8 & 4) and the other half.

The RRS does have a smaller cabin but frankly if the RRS isn't big enough, you're carrying too much st!!

The TDV8 is an awesome engine.

I would also consider the FFRR, for a couple of grand above budget you could be into a 60k mile 4.4 TDV8, much nicer interior than either and more of a timeless look to it than the Sport, which is now looking a little dated.

I was considering looking at this one...

Think we are going down the Disco route, for size and practicality mainly.

The FFRRs are lovely and I would have one, but my wife doesn't like them.

I would happily have either FFRR or a Disco, and the Disco will probably hold its money better.

The Disco 5 looks like it is going to be far less utilitarian than the 4 and that I am sure will keep as many wanting a Disco 4 as those who have to have a new 5.
