Winch for Defender 90 TD5
Discussion
I'm using the truck for off roading and wanted a winch for self recovery.... I had the winch bumper added and was really just asking for friendly advice on what it might cost and what else might need to be done....
I see plenty of other trucks with winches, so what needs to be done to the electrics to run one??? This certainly won't be for "bling" as you say...

I had a winch on my 90......I say "had" because it's no longer fitted having deteriorated to the point of uselessness due to lack of use.
I only fitted it as I got it for nothing and it seemed like a good idea but in five years or so I used it for self-recovery once.
Unless you're on a major expedition somewhere or go in for competitions you just don't need one.
As well as needing stronger front springs to carry a deceptively heavy drum of cable, you also need a second battery ideally and uprated alternator to power the damn thing unless you're going right over the top and going hydraulic?
Using one is also a complete faff and in the time it takes to set yourself up for winching you can usually extract yourself from whatever bother you're in by other means which also happen to be much safer too.

As much as it pains me to say it, I wouldn't bother with one either. I have only got one of my defenders stuck to the point of self recovery ( a 90 on MUDs) and even the hydraulic winch wasn't getting it out !!
It was stuck up to the axles in the back garden, the only thing to get it out was the tractor !!

If you've managed to get yourself stuck, the best way to get un-stuck is to go out the way you came in. i.e. Backwards!! By far the quickest way is to get a quick tow from a mate but if you have to do self-recovery, you are going to be much better off with a hand winch (Tirfor) and a shovel.

The reality is, which winch is a bit like how long is a piece of string...
Your budget and exact use will dictate which ones to look at.
Be it, mechanical, hydraulic or electric.
And then depending on what type of winch and it's intended use, will let you know what other accessories, upgrades and installation components you'll need.
For 'normal' off roading in the UK there is likely very little need for a winch though.
