I just can't do it!

I have a lot on, young family, wooden boat, job, other projects. All I need is a big comfy boring reliable sensible estate car. Instead, I work my way through a pile of stupid junk with constant drama along the way.

I sat on the settee last night with the specific intention of selecting a sensible car and managed to short list a 25 year old 5.0ltr Merc and a 1960's Reliant Scimitar.

I've resigned myself to a life of stupid car purchases.

Likewise.

Got a new contract with a 130 mile a day commute.

So promptly went and bought a 23 year old merc 320te on near 200k. A tank of fuel every 2 and a bit days.

I feel your pain, its an affliction.

My first child was born on the 30th December 2015.

I sold the Mercedes ML I had and bought a kit car in Feb '16.

I feel your pain.

It's people like you that give the sensible "heads rule hearts" types like me some much needed encouragement!

He he..

I've tried both at the same time. I have 2 boys and a very big dog. I've had a Merc E class and a Grand Cherokee (sensible) alongside a BMW 330ci and Audi S4 convertible. The Merc and the Jeep barely moved in two years compared to the convertibles. So even when I buy something sensible I seem not to use it if at all possible.

Just got a Golf R Estate, so I give myself less than 6 months before my next impractical purchase. I think it'll be a CLK500.

I was seeking a commute car to alternate between my Discovery 2.

I bought a V8 XJR. I'm averaging 12 mpg.

My other sensible purchases also include a Daimler Double Six and an XJ40 Sovereign.

I've been looking a lot at V10 S6 Avants recently because they have a very big boot.

OP you are what the country needs. Without people like you there would nothing for neighbours to talk about.

Excuse the pun but I'm in the same boat.

Had a really short, less than 10 miles commute to work, all city driving. Ran 2 BMW V12's in succession... managed less than 300 miles from a 95 liter tank. biggrin

And now, temporarily out of a job I'm contemplating to sell my old BMW 530 and get another 750. Which is obvs the sensible thing to do.

Due to the oil industry downturn I decided to get rid of my 3 year old diesel 4x4 on PCP and buy something cheaper that I would own outright as the £530 per month was bothering me when I didn't know how long I'd have a job.

I told my wife I was buying a cheaper car that wouldn't have monthly payments.

I'm not sure what she thought I'd be buying but apparently it wasn't a 10 year old BMW 645. Doing my bit for the oil industry!

You can explain it to her, but can't understand it for her.

I know the feeling! I went from a job doing less then 6000 miles a year happily running a Lotus Exige S as a daily. To a role where i am doing over 15,000 miles per year and had to get something sensible and practical. So the obvious choice was a Jaguar XFR 5.0 supercharged V8, like you for some reason i just can't do sensible just yet!!!

Would save me a lot of money if i could just get a economical car doing a million miles per gallon but at the moment i look for Smiles Per Gallon!!! smile

No such thing as a "sensible" car purchase...

Everyone's taste is different and should be celebrated IMO

Hey. Buying cars is tricky. I started looking at small convertibles for my wife to use to get to the office. Minis, that kind thing.
Ended up with a supercharged 5.5ltr V8. But at least I got the convertible bit right.
