As per the title, our car (2011 L322) has been valet parked for a while and today the alarm has gone off for the first time ever. It would not reset from the fob, I needed to restart the car.

Coincidence or has something happened to it whilst it has been parked?

With all things electrical on the L322, start with the battery. Low charge causes all kinds of weirdness. Mine, with a new 110Ah battery, will site OK for a week or two. After you've charged it (or gone for a good drive) it should be OK. Get on the ffrr.com forum and look at the battery threads!

That was my first thought, but I drove 200 miles home so presume it was charged.

Well, it could be a failing alternator or a failing battery. Just get a meter on it when you park up for the evening, then again the next morning.
