Ok consider this HYPOTHETICAL situation

Car Goes to Dealer A who carries out service.
Claims there is an oil leak when there patently is not given low oil usage of car over time.
Dealer (under warranty) refurbs engine.

Specialist B picks up car from Dealer A to carry out some wear and tear work the Dealer would charge more for.

Specialist B notes that car is picked up WITH NO OIL IN IT AT ALL directly after car has completed MAJOR SERVICE.

All the time you are on holiday, you are told of this issue on your return.

What kind of comeback have you got to dealer A to get the oil that you have been invoiced for, actually put in the car!?

Any thoughts, or anyone else been in a similar situation?

I'd advise dealer B not to touch anything now & would contact dealer A telling them what has happened, cc the letter to the dealer principle of dealer A. I would make it very clear that you are extremely disappointed & will be asking for a full engine check to ascertain any potential damage. Make it clear that you will not be letting this matter lie, then see what they say. nightmare!

has dealer B found any damage?

no damage - just pi**ed off that that this hypothetical individual has certainly been charged 90 quid for oil that he did not get!!

Situation compunded by the fact that car has sat at Specialist B for a week before I've found out that when Specialist B picked up said car and drove it back to their garage, the oil warning light came on and stayed on. As this is after a major service where all fluids should have been checked the hypothetical individual is livid, however not sure how much recourse he has due to the elapsed time..

I have always been of the opinion that if the oil warning light comes on the engine is well and truly Donald Ducked, period.I would rant, rave and tell em you want a new engine mate

I have heard that dealer B helps dealer A with difficult problems. I suggest and independant inspection to check for damage.

Hope all is well for future events.

Although the hypothesis may have strayed a little:

1) How the hell can the oil warning light come-on and stay on? If there is no oil in the sump, you would have an oil light + zero pressure on the guage immediately on firing up.

2) What kind of muppet from Independent B continues to drive the vehicle with these warnings displayed?

3) An alternative could be that the oil filter was insufficiently tightened resulting in a sudden pressure loss and rapid loss of oil. The evidence would be clear however with oil everywhere.

Assuming Indy B is not lying:
Dealer A has clearly been negligent in forgetting the oil/filter AND not testing the vehicle after servicing both of which he has presumably charged for.

Independent B has clearly been negligent in driving and/or continuing to drive when there is clearly a problem.

Knowing they are negligent is one thing - Proving it is another. My guess is that they will both try to blame each other. Caveat Emptor.

Right lets get some things stright.

1. Car is fine - no damage reported - oil light came on in a short journey to dealer B, driver /(from B) realised what was happening and kept oil pressure during the journey.

2. I have not contacted A yet, as only evidence I have on the situation is the word of one of the mechanics at B, and frankly thats worth diddly squat in the end.

3. I don't have the dealers itemised bill so I don't know what was paid for / what the opil cost was etc, so I can't ask for a specific amount of compensation.

4. Car is still At B's being sorted, so until I get the chance to head down there and speak to the main person in charge and get the sequence of events straight I'm on a hiding to nothing.

5. I will be writing to the dealer principal of A to express my dissapointment relating to this incident, when otherwise their service has always been exemplary.

Might as well close this thread, I'm not going to name and shame as that is against Teds policy on these things and after all I'm a loyal PHer not a stirrer

Thanks for your support guys.
