Planning a European Road Trip Sept 2016
Discussion
I am planning a European road trip w/c 12 Sept ....this year, well more accurately I have spent hours reading various write-ups on Pistonheads, studying maps but so far have yet to finalise the route and accommodation.
My thoughts as follows;
Day 1 - Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais and on to Baden Baden
Day 2 - Baden Baden to Lake Lucerne
Day 3 - Lake Lucerne to Lake Como via some mountain passes
Day 4 - rest day Como
Day 5 onwards ??
Not sure about journey back to Calais, could spend 2-3 days on return.
What's the options for fun roads and / or interesting scenery?
Recommendations for reasonable hotels with good parking would be appreciated.
I did a Euro road trip last year and stayed in Baden Baden on one of our stops. Nice town but it was so hot, edging 40C. May sound bloody obvious but make sure your hotel has air con. Took it for granted most hotels in a hot location would have this but ours didn't. With the heat combined with a room next to the town clock which bonged most hours, our stay was pretty unbearable! This was July though so may be a bit cooler in September.
What is that strange spell that Baden-Baden has on british folk? Its a horrible boring ancient city where old people live.
If you value style, tranquility, marvellous views and exclusivity much higher than many stars in your accomodation, and seeing that you plan to go to Como anyway, this might be for you:

Please have a look at pictures first and decide whether its old charme is for you. It has a basic restaurant on site, quite good though. The panelled breakfast room with the large doors open, with the view towards the west in the morning sun, is unforgettable. Exceptionally great driving roads everywhere, too.

A little bit of info here, covering some of the places you mention, including the route and a variety of stopping points. Here's a page with the route outlined, plenty of info on the other pages. Please let me know if this helps even a tiny bit!

Thanks great write up, I'm sure the route and experience will be helpful. Will let you know how I get on.Hi. In Italy at the moment. Weather is really good so far. We are expecting rain as we are going back via Col de la Bonnette, Grenoble and the Morvah region. From Lake Como you can go via the Stelvio to Bolzano Bozen and then you have a choice. The Dolomites or the Austrian Alps. If you are planning to be making your way back, head for the Timmelsjoch then Oetz, Imst and the Alpenstrase to Freidrickshafen where you can visit the Donier museum which is better than the Zeppelin museum in the same town. Go west from there via Freiburg and the Southern Vosges and back North to Calais. Alternative head north on the unrestricted autobahn A81 to Stuttgard and the west via the Black Forest and Ardennes via Luxembourg and Belgium. For the Dolomites go to Trento, SP71 to Cavaleze, SP620 Paso Lavaze and to Cortina via Paso Gui SP638. Then you have a choice to head to Austria or black via Vipiteno. Enjoy your trip.
