I have always liked the HSV's since I saw the top gear report years ago against the M5, I am struggling to find out more, what are the differences between the different models eg GTS VX1, GTS-R VX2, GTS VT2 etc, general running costs, and any general info as running one.

any info appreciated.

This is a quick history of UK HSV's.......

(VT1)-GTS 1997-1998 5.0LTR OR 5.7LTR (320hp LS1 engine) 3-5 sold
(VT11)-GTS 1999-2001 (approx) 5.7ltr (340hp ls1 engine) 31 sold
(VT 11) GTS-R 1999-2001 (approx) 5.7ltr (410hp C4B engine) 13 sold
(VX1)-GTS 2001-2002 (approx) 5.7ltr (350hp ls1 engine) 5 sold
(VX1)-GTS-R 2001-2002 (approx) 5.7ltr (410hp C4B engine) 3 sold

From start to finish each UK model stayed almost the same in spec..............

Pictures and history can also be found on the club site www.hsvdriversclub.co.uk

Also look on the for sale page to see a very very nice GTS-R...............

I'm afraid I have nothing useful to add other than to line up in the queue of people asking questions, but I've wanted one since driving a rented 3.8 Commodore (VT I think but could of course be wrong) in Oz on holiday in 1999 ;-)

Questions are:

1. Is £15k-ish a realistic price for a standard VT11 GTS (not "R")?. The ones that have been on the market recently seem to be around the 20-25k mark but equally seem to be difficult to sell at that price level judging by some recent posts.

2. What are the approximate servicing costs and fuel "economy"? According to general knowledge fuel economy is reasonable for such a large engine, but does that apply in the real world as well? Not expecting "real" economy of course but how bad is it in reality?

3. Are there any serious problems to look out for? An equivalent of the Nikasil issue for BMW's and V8 Jaguars for example?

Any help much appreciated. Am looking to buy within the next 6mths hopefully, a few factors permitting (wife rather than finances being the key here ;-))

1. you should have at least £20,000 to go shopping for a HSV GTS............ all of the cars under that price have been for sale buy people needing to sell fast or dealers who got them cheap as P/X from company car owners.........

Now most HSV's are in private hands dont expect many cheap cars!!!

The big reason for slow selling is the fact that few people know about the cars but that is changing so buy soon...............and remember there are under 60 cars out there....

2. On a long drive (UK-South of France) cruise set at 95 I got 27mpg.................

On average expect low to mid 20's and it is easy to get it into single figures on the track..........

3. Problems are few and far between, just a few things to look for.
a. worn rotors (£500 a pair + fitting)
b. drive line shunt (£200 new Dougnut)
c. Gearbox might be noisy (mostly change of oil £50)
d. as above but diff noise
e. almost all cars will have stone chipped front bars!!!

4. servicing is a oil change every 6000 miles (filter £2.75) - (oil £50-£70) and a full fluid change every 2 yrs. apart from that no big costs over normal ware (NO cam belt etc.)

Servicing is an easy DIY job or a local garage (we have all the servicing details on CD in the club) and who knows maybe a few quality Vauxhall dealers may offer a service!!!!!!!! hint hint.........

I love the HSV for sale on pistonheads, very nice about £3k out of my price range, and I have to sell the Chim yet.

Is it a nightmare getting insurance ? I can hear the phone calls now " a honda HSV ?"

You can hit me on the back of the head another time ukhsv!
The VT1 had the older Holden V8 engine (Iron? block). In OZ the clubsport got the 195kw 5.0, the GTS the 220kw 5.7 (some had HRT blueprinted engines up to 230kw)

"motomk" I could trust you to chip in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a very potted history of UK cars to get a novice underway before we tell him about all the OZ/UK variations and as we only know of 3 VT1 cars I was economical with the facts........

On the HSV's the 343mm rotors are big $$$. The Monaros would have smaller brakes on them and can be had for not a lot of $. I think the VXR has the 330mm which over here are about $500 a disc.
