993 Varioram & C2S

Could anybody here describe the benefits of a Varioram 993 model as opposed to the earlier car? I understand the engine has a few more horsepower, but is it enough to make much of a difference to the driving experience?
Similarly, does anybody here have any driving experience with the C2S model and how that relates to the standard 993?

ref 993 varioram vs non vario IMHO there is not a real difference between the 2 in normal driving. The difference is only 285 vs 272 bhp anyway. Also if you speak to Porsche rolling road operators rarely are the vario cars any higher bhp on the rollers than the early cars and one respected Porsche tuner told me he has never seen a standard 993 vario produce 285 bhp....
The Variorams are meant to be a little torquier, but the standard 993 engine is less peakier than the 964 anyway, so not sure whether you'd notice it.
As for the C2S - I don't see the point of it. They didn't even put Turbo red brakes on it, like the C4S. It seems to have been more of a cosmetic marketing exercise to make the end of C2 production. Look quite nice in vesuvius metallic, though, but there are better cars to spend 40k on. Turbo 4 for example.

As for the C2S - I don't see the point of it. They didn't even put Turbo red brakes on it, like the C4S. It seems to have been more of a cosmetic marketing exercise to make the end of C2 production. The C2S was all cosmetic, it didn't have the Turbos brakes or suspension set-up. As a result the car is heavier than a standard 993. Having been driven in a C2 and C2S on the track back to back, the C2 is far more chuckable. The 'S' tends to wallow in the corners due to the extra weight.

You cannot possibly be serious. The weight difference is 50Kg which is in the order of 3.5%. That's less than the weight of the average passenger. It's also roughly the weight of 53 litres of fuel, or the difference between a full tank and a one third full one.
Just had a quick look at the latest GT Purely Porsche mag in Mr Patels magazine emporium (I dont buy it- great pics but a bit low on content) but in this case there is a decent review of the 993C2S. The final opinion is that the S is a bit of a 'Kings road car' rather than a drivers car.
I tend to agree as does Tim Harvey (BTCC touring car driver) who is a long time 911 nut but when he 1st drove one in the 90's (in an old 1990s car mag group test) quoted "oh why have Porsche gone and ruined ruined my favorite car"!!
That kinda somes up the 993C2s for me.
If you can afford the extra for a 993RS and you love real drivers cars you wouldnt regret it!

LHD ones are better value. Still v expensive, because these are the classic porkers of tomorrow.
If you can't afford a 993RS maybe consider a 964RS.
www.mcp-motorsport.co.uk normally has one or two 993/964 RSs in. Martin's a bit of a tit according to some, but he deals with some handy suppliers in Germany.
You may also like to consider a RHD Turbo 4 (993tt) as these don't suffer from the super premium of RHD 993RSs.

I just bought a 1996 LHD Carrera 4S for silly money (less than 30k).
Violet Metallic, dark purple leather, turbo body/wheels, turbo suspension (10mm lower at front, 20mm lower at back), turbo brakes (big reds), turbo front bumper, heated 8 way power seats, Becker sat nav, wired in radar detector, 62k miles with fsh, air con, sunroof, originally a dutch car brought back by a brit working in Holland.
It's my daily driver and it rocks.
I have pics available if you want, and if you are in the south then we can meet up and you can have a look if you like.
Unbeatable value for money.
I'm sure it's a lard arse compared to an RS but i'm taking it on the Cannonball in October so we'll see how comfy it is over 3000 miles in 5 days eh?

yeah the big prob with 993 RS is the price but £58k for a rhd is flippin' high. The best RS ive ever seen was a real low mile FSH car in an indepentant for £55k but it was realy realy sweet and that was 18months ago. But if you do consider an RS remember it can have been trackdayed to death but from the outside look fine so get it inspected..
As Pete points out, the C4S had more 'under the skin' than the C2S, so isn't a bad choice. Just lacks the oomph of the turbo, really, but you'll pay 10k more for the privilege.
The C4S - and even the Turbo - will be more comfortable than the RS as a daily driver. Depends what you want from the car, razor sharp responses or a bit softer with some comfort thrown in.
BTW, if you fancy the yellow Turbo on Martin's site, I know the dealer in Germany and can help you deal direct. You'll save about 4k or something.
