ok heres one for you guys out there with any technical ability.
Can you change a thrust bearing without changing a clutch? or is this throwing good money after bad? would you be better off doing it all at once whilst the machines stripped?

You CAN just change the thrust bearing - I did it once when the bearing siezed but the clutch was relatively new. BUT I would say always replace the whole thing while you are at it.

It depend on the car, on most clutches the thrust bearing is fitted over the gearbox input shaft so you have to split the engine and box, no real point in not changing the clutch unless your time is worth less the cost of a clutch, unlikely.

IMHO of course

Wassup wiv it? Your clutch may be OK, check it's not worn down to the rivets, also (couple of observations whilst doing mine) [ramble mode] care should be taken when you replace the bearing carrier on the clutch fork and ensure the retaining spring clip has enough tension.
Work the clutch thrust bearing carrier both forward and backward to ensure that the fork is retained firmly on the carrier saddle. [/ramble mode]
Put it back the right way round!!!

Edited for appalling toiping.
