It will vary from club to club of course.

If you take Arsenal as an example, i'd say last season was successful as was the previous.

They finished second in the Prem, only one team can win it and I don't think that means coming second is a failure.

They always qualify for the CL and always challenge for the Prem.

I'd say Spurs had a successful season last year, United and Chelsea didn't.

What are others thoughts with their definitions of success?

I think these days with 'super-managers' and gigantic transfer budgets Man City and Man U can only see a truly successful season as winning both Premiership and CL.

Any less isn't what Mourinho and Guardiola (and many of the players) are being paid truly staggering sums to deliver.

Disagree. The team that won it had far less resources than Arsenal, and arguably an inferior squad. That makes Arsenal's 2nd place finish an abject failure.

Of course my team, Chelsea, failed even more spectacularly than Arsenal.

This season I would be delighted with a 4th place finish.

For my team Bury it would be keeping the manager, a mid table finish and a cup run to generate some extra cash.

Premier League looks a bit of a lottery this year with so many managerial changes and new players coming in. Not sure either Arsenal or Spurs have the mentality to win it, Mourinho knows how to win the league, Guardiola may have to adapt his usual style, Conte looked a good manager in Euros, I have no idea!

I can't see any English teams doing well in Europe.

In the prem, the one true success from last season was Leicester. I wouldn't consider being second best as being particularly successful.

That said Arsenal and some others had varying degree's of success that being qualification for the Champions League and the Europa League.

United had some success in winning the FA Cup. City had some success in winning the Capital One Cup.

I would consider my team, Man Utd, as successful if they were to win any of the competitions they enter. The prize I covet more than any though is the League title.

Does history only show success as winning titles or cups? You wouldn't look back in 20 years and say oh that club was successful because they qualified for the champions league, or got the semi-final of the FA Cup.

Silverware classes success.

I agree.

Qualifying for other competitions seems these days to indicate success. Staying up and not being relegated also.
