Road legal track day tyres.
Discussion
So one of my track days at Hethel requires road legal tyres, annoyingly slicks aren't allowed.
My car has 13" rims, 8" front and 9" rear, weighs 530kg and makes 600hp. What tyres are recommended? The shortlist from reading this and other forums are ZZR and R888.
Where is the most cost effective place to buy them?

Hi Peter - you could try Kumho Ecsta V70A which are available in 215 and 235 widths for 13" rims. We use them for sprints/hillclimbs in super-soft compound - you'll need the medium (K61) or hard (K91) compound depending on how long you want to be on track for any one session. You could also look at Avon ACB1 - http://www.avonmotorsport.com/road-legal/performan... - they are cross-ply construction though.
Peter, I have been using ZZR's of my sevens for years now, they are excellent , and probably about as close as you can come to a slick whilst still being road legal.
I get mine fitted by BMTR in Perry Bar in Birmingham, they are the main race and Motorsport suppliers, they often are at race events too, where they offer a fitting service for tyres that you can pre order from them and have them fitted at the event if they are at a venue more local to you.

Peter - I ran slicks all day at a Hethel trackday a couple of weeks ago. It was organised by Lotus on Track, but all the officials running the event were Hethel local staff - and at no time did they mention or object to my slicks.
As for ZZRs - good tyre - you might find the 185s a bit too narrow (and the 215s a bit too wide) for your fronts? I imagine that with all that bhp it's quite handy if you can turn corners...
Great car!

Ha, it's a bit of a riot if so minded. It's actually not that scary if you're able to modulate throttle positions carefully. It does peel back eyelids.FST said:

That's interesting to know, I may enquire about that as it'll save me buying a set of Force rims and suitable tyres. Standard wheels won't fit, annoyingly. The new wheels are 8" front and 9" rear which (according to the BMTR website) will support 225/245 tyres. I need all the contact patch I can get as this car arrives at corners really quickly, I've already beached it in the gravel trap at Vale at Silverstone due to messing up braking. As for ZZRs - good tyre - you might find the 185s a bit too narrow (and the 215s a bit too wide) for your fronts? After all that, there were only two real options in the size I need.
The Kumho or ZZS. Everything else was too small.
I ended up with the ZZS in 215/55/13 front and 245/50/13 rear.
Glad to hear the 245/50/13 size is now available. I'll be interested to see how they work, but I suspect they'll be nothing spectacular. IMHO the Kumho's a much better tyre. The Kumho or ZZS. Everything else was too small.

Yes, it was a tough decision and I totally heard you when you recommended them, but I did quite a bit of reading and saw good results in sprinting and some hill climbing where the winning cars were all on ZZS tyres over ZZRs, that plus the slight additional width sealed it for me.
If they're no good I'll swap them over immediately for Kumhos, it's so nice only paying £500ish for a set of tyres lol.

Pete the Sprint reports you see are from this year where Kumho are not allowed as they are not E marked for sale for road use.
They Kumho will be the tyre if you need to change in the future and will be by far the better tyre compared to ZZS.
ZZS v Kumho or ZZR are over 2 sec/ 60 sec run slower (However they are a compound harder at least).
215/235 will fit your rim widths perfectly.
Mel Williams tyres can supply all of the tyres you have mentioned or others have listed.
