Funky,

I am a Pocket PC convert. I like the iPaq's from Compaq (HP), especially the later models which are bluetooth enabled.

Expensive though!

eBay has a number of the last generation iPaq's, (no bluetooth, but functionality can be added via sleeves).

All depends on how much you want to spend.

I'm agree that the IPAQ is probably the better choice, You can aslo get sofware for them thats as good if not better than the Geodesy system, Just need the GPS sleeve!

Good luck with your choice!

Richard,

I have looked for software for the iPaq/GPS sleeve combo that provides Geodesey functionality, but couldn't find it.

Could you point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

I've used most of them over the years (during my time working at PC Magazine) and I still think the Palm is the best option. Though it doesn't have the Windows thing in it, it's easier to use, lightweight, and compact -- none of which IMHO apply to the iPaq. There are also more software and accessories out there for the Palm too. Plus, there have been a worrying number of reliability problems reported wrt the iPaq.

I agree with Manek - the Palm type PDAs are better all round than the Pocket PCs, both in terms of variety of available software and (especially) battery life.

*but* IMO The Psion 5MX still beats them all - with a bigger screen and a keyboard, it's more usable (provided you don't need all that battery sapping illuminated colour girly nonsense ).

Tat said, I reckon they're all still too fragile and temperamental - you can't yet beat a pen & paper

I think the Ipaq is rovers luv spuds as far as features and using it goes, 'specially the pocket maps. The only problem is the batteries, mines dead after 18 months and I know of four others on the way out, Compaq now class them as a consumable item. Fortunately there are now companies doing them at £50 rather than the £100+ from compaq (unless its under warranty.
My wife uses a palm pilot but prefers my ipaq.

Have you seen either Pocket StreetMaps or TrafCam? The latter doesn't run on the iPaq yet but I understand they are developing a Windows CE compatible product.

If you're looking at the Palm range, might be worth considering the Handspring...

Yikes, find myself in agreement with CarZee....5MX is advanced bit of kit....shame about the poor quality screen and the fact they don't make 'em any more

are the combined phone and pda's any good? I would love a decent internet connection while on the move.

Problem with that is you lose a degree of redundancy. That is I've lost my phone and my PDA at one time or another, but if I lost both in one hit I'd be farked.

Also, you'd be hard pressed to find a modern PDA that has the battery life anything like approaching that of modern phones - mine only needs charging once a week.

Thanks Matt, I know about the navigation system for the iPaq, I just didn't know about the Geodessey functionality, (traffic camera location warning).

Major Clanger, thanks for the link to pocketstreetmap which appears to provide this...

Get a SonyEricsson T68i -- triband, WAP (cr*p), GPRS and Bluetooth. While you can pick up an airtime deal that costs you only around £70 for the phone, I sniffed around for a good deal, but found that, when I asked Vodafone for the PUK code to move my number to another network, they made me an offer that meant I could stay with them and ger a new phone, effectively for free.

Might be worth trying that little trick.

Just ordered a Sony PEG-SL10 from Expansys - only monochrome but high res and uses Memory stick (like my digi video cam) and runs Palm OS 4.1 very small and compact, runs on AAA batteries (so no charger to carry) and retails at £107. Sounds like a bargain, I'll find out soon....

Check www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=PEG-SL10

I had an Ipaq 3870 - and after being back 6 times to Compaq they eventually replaced it - then I sold the hunk of junk-
I now have a Toshiba e740 - although feels a little on the placky side is a lot smaller the the Ipaq and lighter - infact not far off the dimensions of a Palm but has both an SD card slot and CF card slot internally - also the batteries are clip on like a mobile so you can have more than one to hand - (they do a large capacity one which makes the unit about the size of an Ipaq but with probably three times the battery life!
