National anthems
Discussion
After listening to the German/French national anthems during the euros, and seeing how emotional the players got whilst singing at the top of their voices, it got me thinking, is 'God save the queen' the worst national anthem in the world?
Firstly there's very few people I know that give 2 s
ts about the monarchy, secondly there's very few people I know that believe in God, and finally, what exactly are we supposed to be trying to save the Queen from?
If I was standing side by side with my fellow players, I'd rather sing the lyrics to a Britney Spears song than the British national anthem.
So I was thinking whilst all this brexit thing is going through, isn't it an ideal time to update the national anthem?
A possible suggestion, a slightly tweaked/shortened version of Oasis - wonderwall.

I listen to Richard Herring's podcast where you talks to various celebrity guests and this was the subject of discussion one week, the conclusion was the national anthem should be this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfWlot6h_JM
Our national anthem is the pits. Been saying this for years. A national anthem should be inclusive. Often about a country's geography, (lakes, forests, volcanoes, glaciers or whatever) or it's military successes of the past. Ours is about god and the queen, which doesn't give atheist republicans who love their country much to sing about.
Italy has the best national anthem.

I'm not the biggest fan of our anthem but when the OP says everyone he knows doesn't care about the Royal Family I wonder who he knows!!
Have you never seen the turnout when it's the Queens Birthday, a Royal birth or wedding, A funeral, the anniversary of the coronation.
The Royal family are surely the single most popular thing in the country!
They fill the mall with a million people and all they do is come out and wave.
British people care massively about the Royals, there's no doubt about that.

A million turned out against the Iraq invasion but apparently they were wet lefty hand wringing scabby student hippie waster Muzzie apologists and didn't count. If a million turn out for the queen, 59 million don't.Have you never seen the turnout when it's the Queens Birthday, a Royal birth or wedding, A funeral, the anniversary of the coronation.

There should be an English national anthem for the relevant sporting teams, Land of Hope and Glory or I vow to Thee My Country or Jerusalem.
GSTQ is feckin' awful and irrelevant. She's 90, how much more saving does she expect us to scream for?

The second verse would be spine tingling in a full stadium and a crowd giving it some.Thankyou4calling said:

Some people care. Maybe most people care (although I'm not convinced). But it's not hard to have a national anthem that includes all people. GSTQ patently fails to do that.
