We will be upping sticks from Annecy this Saturday and unfortunately heading back North as we begin the journey home. Got 4 nights between here and the ferry so planned a couple in Amiens but with a 2 year old in tow, I don't really like to do more than 5 hours a day. We did Troyes on the way down which was nice, but I'll be honest it's a bit flat there for me. Prefer some hills with a view. Anywhere recommended on the way up? Not so much sites rather areas to stay. It means a full day between so realistically it may just be a really nice site to relax on. We have a few places to visit at Amiens so it'll be the last place for a bit of sunbathing.

Go via the German / French border for hills.
Mulhouse, Schlumpf museum.

Not sure if it's off your route but for hills have a look at Laon. There's an annual carfest and hill climb but you've missed it this year. But Laon's well worth a detour

Further on from here as well is the town of Gerardmer which is in the Voges mountains which are beautiful. Plus there is a large lake in the town where you could hire a bot with the nipper.

I'm not sure if you are a MHer or tugger. If you are a MHer there is a large aire in the town centre as well where you can stay for c. €4.50 a night too. Oh...loads of food places and a large merry go round for the nipper in the town centre.

If you go there I recommend the restaurant The Grizzly, which does these 2 foot flaming skewers of meat...for a reasonable price biggrin

Besançon is nice, the zoo in the old walled city is pretty interesting.

Agree about Gerardmer. There's a nice quiet little campsite a few miles west - http://camping.barba.pagesperso-orange.fr
