Is anybody able to tell me how to separate the wing mirror head from the arm?

Both my wing mirror arms are flaking again so I would like to get them sprayed properly. The arms are off the car and I have removed the outer torx screw on mirror but I still cannot get the head off the arm.

Any assistance much appreciated, thanks.

Vantage?
Big job.
In a nutshell;
1. Remove inside door trim
2. Lift rear of fixed quarter window, remove rubber surround at top and pull out window
3. Remove the door mirror rubber cheater panel
4. Disconnect multiplug and release harness from fir tree clips
5. Remove Torx bolts (x3) and screw from glass channel, remove mirror assembly
6. Removing the mirror head from mirror arm by folding the mirror one way and it exposes torx screws. Fold the other way to get the others. Dont forget ones underneath.

My advise?
If you haven't already removed your mirrors from the door:
Unscrew the mirror head and pull away from the rotten mirror arm.
Mask up the mirror and door.
Dremel off the coating where rotten and surrounding areas (be meticulous).
Spray with etching primer.
Spray with textured black paint.
Reassemble.

Will last a very long time.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

I had the arms off the car but in my haste I never thought to pull the mirrors out beyond their normal angle and so failed to find the second torx screw. Simple when you know how!

Hi, I have the same problem and am trying to deal with the flaking paint without removing the mirrors from the door. However, I have not been able to remove the mirror casing from the arm. When you say "Unscrew the mirror head", where is the screw or if there is more than one, where are they? Apart from a couple of torxs on the underside of the arm near the car body, I can only find one accessible torx bolt at the outer edge of the arm which looks like would have to be removed but having done so, I cannot budge the mirror casing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

When the mirror is folded out, manually move it further out than its normal position. That will reveal the other bolt.

Hammerite do a very good match for the black arms, in a spray can.

Many thanks - never thought of pushing the mirror casing out. I had already started the repaint and used Black Magic manufactured by Flag Paints which
looks OK to me. I'll see if it lasts! The peeling paint is an annoyance though and is not something I have ever come across in any of my previous (and much cheaper) cars. It is a poor reflection on Aston Martin.

Hi all, appreciate this is an old thread revival, but I damaged the outer plastic of the mirror so I think I will have to replace the whole mirror head.

Does anyone know which Volvo mirror I need to buy?

Thanks in anticipation!
