DVLA: Cherish is a word I use to describe....

I know I'll find out soon enough but:

Car I've got has got somebody else's plate on, which needs to go on retention for him.

I've got a number which I want to place on said car.

Can the DVLA do this in one hit, or does the car need to go onto a third "holding" number (usually the original)?

I'm sure it can be done in one hit with the right paperwork.

Obviously the DVLA local office could tell you for sure on the phone but if it helps you sleep better, I'm sure its a one hitter.

Presumably the "right paperwork" is

V5, tax disc, mot, retention cert (mine), V778/1 & the right amount of wonga?

You might need insurance certificate aswell?

One last thing, phone them up first before you go.

There is a chance that if they can do this in one hit, you might need to book the appointment at the DVLA office to get it done.

Other scenarios are: You may have to wait, or return in about an hour

OR

You will get told they can't do it in one hit.

You know what they're like, jobsworth gits!

It's taken me 10 weeks to get a V5! First they want £19, then they don't..blah..blah..

As I understand it, if you own the car, you own the plate that goes with it. The previous owner should have begun steps to remove the plate before the car was sold. Legally, I think that plate is yours and you're entitled to keep it. Suggest you ring DVLA and check!

Phoned the DVLA (press one for this, two for that etc)

I was advised it can be done in one hit. (I hope it wasn't the same person who explained how a V62 works!! )

A little project for next week methinks.

Took the documents to DVLA, and after only a little adjustment, Robert's your Mother's brother!




All I need to do now is get the plates on the car, sorted.

(The V5 & new retention certificate will arrive via the post)

So, the anwer is, yes! you can do it in one hit.

Ever heard the expression "spoke too soon?"

Well, when I double checked the sheaf of papers I'd been given by the DVLA they had forgotten to give me a form V948. This is what you need to get your plates made up!!

(I popped back & got one no problems!)
