Hi all,
I know this isn't an IT forum, but loads of you know a lot more about this kind of thing than I do and I was wondering whether anyone could help me??
I have a Sony memory stick containing corrupt image files. I'd like to recover the images if at all possible as some of them are irreplaceable. I've been using an OmniFlash UnoMas card reader on a PC running Win2000 (I know, I know!!). The problem seems to have been caused by an over-enthusiastic hand luggage X-ray machine at an airport.
Does anyone have any good ideas? Pretty please??!

Memory sticks are pretty specific thiings so it's doubtful. I have however got a genuine sony reader as an integral part of my laptop which I use all the time. It's a long shot but being all genuine sony stuff it might hang togeather a bit better and at least facilitate a copy to cd or something. If you can wait a few weeks to pie on the beach I'll bring it down and your welcome to try.
I had to recover a load of my pics from a corupt SmartCard on my Fuji camera..
After two days shooting at Brands Hatch, as you might imagine, I was a little unimpressed with finding I;d lost 300+ photos
I used a tool called WINHEX which can cope with recoviering all sorts of files.. It can identify JPEGs by their file headers...
If the 'disk' can be opened by WinHex you've a good chance of recovery.
You'll need the registered version though..
Email me thru my profile if you want more info/help..

Are the images corrupt when you try to view them on the camera that took the photos?
Yes, I just get a Format Error message on the LCD display. The problem occurred when I tried to load the images from the card to the PC's hard disk - I could view the filenames (and one thumbnail!), but on attempting to copy it crashed. Then when I tried again I could view all the subdirectories on the card, but the subdirectory containing the images gives me a "Disk not formatted" error.

Thanks CarZee, I'll see what I can find on the 'Net and get back to you.

Mel, thanks for this. If I'm still stuck by the time Pie on the Beach comes round I'd be very happy to take you up on your offer. Thanks!
Not telling what the pix are of.

If the pictures are really that important to you, avoid trying again. The system might end up writing something to the disk, especially if it thinks its not formatted. Try mel's suggestion for cheap way of try (sometimes a better system might be able to read it) or contact a recovery specialists (big money). Your call, but you can contact vogon at least for their advice regarding the medium that you are using and its inherent properties/weaknesses etc. I think the file system is also a FAT system so should be possible to recover.

Shouldn't cost more than a couple of hundred quid. I think they may do a free survey. They are in Oxford.
Good Luck

WinHex is pretty darn good, used it before. As CarZ says, you need to registered version to unlock all the good stuff. Get a trial and look for a hack on astalavista (and try to ignore all the filth on that site), or I'm sure CZ can assist with a suitable nyur nyur copy of it.
Doubtful about XP being any better than anything else at recovery of data - certainly there's nothing built in. You may also wish to try the stick in another reader - it couldn't be the reader that's chucked a 7. Unlikely but worth a shot.
Best of luck.

To all those of you who suggested Winhex....
It worked!! You have my eternal gratitude.
Nifty little tool huh?
For future ref to anyone with a digital camera, the photos on mine got corrupted because the battery died whilst downloading to the PC. Moral of the story: If you're connecting to a PC, put the power adapter on the camera.

So now that the pics will not be on display at the Pie&Tie, what were they?
Ah, well now...
There were lots from a recent trip to Germany, lots of a track day at Bedford (though none of me spinning off the track, fortunately!), and a few irreplaceable ones of someone who's just passed away. Oh, and quite a few of my toys...
