I remember when the Cup Final gripped the nation.

As a kid in the late seventies, I'd watch the first half and then go out and re enact any goals in the garden.

I've never been to a Cup final but always remember the teams having a song which usually charted and watching the teams journey to Wembley on TV.

What memories do others have?

I remember the final being a really special day. Tv coverage was ITV and BBC at the same time normally at lunchtime, tune in a watch the coaches arrive, fans everywhere, players on the pitch, crap songs and a normal kick off time of 3pm, then after the game off to the park with your mates to play football.

Went to 1 final as my Dad worked for 1 of the sponsors, Spurs vs Coventry 1987, neither was my team but as a 12 year old it was amazing. Badgered my Dad all the way home for some boots like Coventry wore, black with 'NIKE' written across the heel. (he got me Hi-tec ones instead ) Gutted.

Now i dont bother with the build up, i will just turn it on before kick off, 17.30 start ? ruined.
Also the semi's being played at Wembley really winds me up, "were are on our way to Wembley......again", plenty of other stadiums that are just as good or even better.

At least it's actually after the end of the season this year.

It has definitely lost some of its excitement!

It definitely doesn't feel as special as I can remember it being when I was growing up.

I guess the Premier League and Champions League mean a whole lot more to the clubs these days.

I wonder if giving the final English Champions League place to the winner would make it more important to the clubs.

Kevin Keegan doing an interview on Wembley Way and the ghosts of 1966 were invoked and all he could say was, "Well, they didn't have computers back then..."

As a child of the seventies, it used to always be sunny and my Mum would have to get us home before the start of the match. We would have fizzy pop and crisps - Which we would never have on any other occasion..

I remember watching the match at university and a friend went out for a pee, someone scored, but we kept it quiet (the score was never on the screen in the early nineties). He didn't find it funny!

It used to be a REALLY special day. Looking back the TV companies really used to string it out. The coaches, suits, pitch walk, it's a knockout....

5.30 kick off? What's that all about?

About 30% at 2nd half kick off. That's what it means to the prawn sandwich brigade.

Cup final day does not really mean much these days, except to fans of the two teams involved.

In the early 1960's, the country (seriously) virtually ground to a halt, shops shut early, streets were deserted, the build up on TV started at 11am, profiles of all the players etc, community singing, "Abide with me"...100,000 fans waving their programmes......3pm kick off

Different times.....biggrin

And it was, of course on both ITV and BBC1. If your favourite team were losing at half -time, we used to turn over and watch the other side in hope of some luck!

1984, as a 9 year old walking up Wembley Way with my Dad. Nearly crying when we lost and a lifetime of hate towards Andy Gray !!!! Not much fun being a Watford fan, but I've never missed a day at Wembley with them (4 in total, 3 losses only the solutary victory against Bolton in a playoff).
