Hi all,

I have four days off between finishing my current job, and starting a new one. Both are long hours, etc, so keen to take a few days to clear my head and go in fresh on Monday.

Question is, what to do? I'm based in London, and don't mind spending a few quid if need be. It'll be Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun this week, so most of my mates will be at work for the first half - could be me only.

Have thought about getting a cheap flight somewhere, or maybe driving up somewhere in this country. I'm more of an outdoor than an indoor type, so maybe a few days in the Lakes/Yorkshire would be good; but doing it alone doesn't sound much fun.

Anyone have any interesting ideas?

Why not hire something a bit sporty and quick and take off out of the city and head north – if you have mates up north, arrange to see them for a drink one nght and then head on northwards to Scotland opr something - probably cost a bit in fuel and mileage but you're in the City - so who cares

Alternatively, have you time to fly to the South of France for a flutter in the casinos?

Just a suggestion ...

Amsterdam - you'll not have any thoughts in your head for for the whole time other than look at the norks on that or where is the nearest 24hr garage?

Head up to Barrow-in-Furness, take a drive over Wrynose and Hardknott passes. Stunning views.

Or Wales, drive over Epynt, Abergwesn, Nant-y-Moch resivoir, Coed-y-Brenin forest, all good stuff.

Fly to Geneva, taxi to Chamonix and stay in a hostel so you meet some people. Ski lots, drink lots, turn up for work on Monday with a massive grin on your face

Thanks for the ideas... I quite like the thought of flying out to do some skiing, although might feel strange not being in a group to begin with. Anyone ever gone out there by themselves?

They're all top ideas, but not sure my pockets are deep enough for French casinos... and still recovering from the last trip to Amsterdam.

Any more thoughts?

Stay at home, call in half a dozen tidy looking Latvian call girls, shag yourself stupid so that all that tension and stress from the previous job evaporates in a cloud of sexual excess and indulgence. Only draw back is that by monday morning your might be little more than a trace of seminal fluid or an encrusted map of africa on the bed sheets, not the ideal way to start a new job I agree but a good way to de-stress from the old one

Few laps of the IOM? When you get bored, just do it in the other direction

Set yourself a budget (20 laps?) and see what the best time you can manage round the Nurburgring is?

Skiing. Skiing by yourself is fun (I mean on the slopes on your own). Its a bit riskier going off piste (actually don't do it at all alone) but its so nice and so tranquil when you just sit down on the snow in sun, look at the view for 10 minutes and then get up and continue your descent. If that doesn't clear your head what will?

head down to here -

www.torcottage.co.uk/

lovely isolated place, no phones, no mobile signal. lovely comfy cottages and nice walks all around - set in its own private valley, babbling river adjacent, very friendly people who manage the grounds, etc. they can also put you in contact with local people for activities if that's what you want. nearby tavistock is a fun place lots of good pubs and restaurants and quite a lively scene considering where it is. also very close to some lovely coastline to gaze out to sea and mull over the meaning of life, etc.

just an idea .... enjoy!

Mmm... interesting suggestion. I grew up less than 10 miles away, so do know the area pretty well

Some great ideas, although this morning I seem to have gone down with a dose of the flu... running nose, shivers and not much voice left. Will have to see how it develops by tonight before working out what to do.

Nope, sorry! Have never been to Barrow itself, just the passes to the North

How can you resist driving up (and down ) Wrynose and Hardknott? Just make sure you have something with a bit of grunt

Its not as fun at 2am in an Escort Mexico with a slipping clutch - *just* about got up Wrynose, the Volvo Amazon seeded behind us was catching us hand over fist - but we lost him going down the other side
