Cost of transporting kids

My kids were taking the mick tonight about how little work I do all week. Then I did some simple maths to shut them up – which shocked them (and me). Basically, it evolves around the amount of driving that I have to do for the kids (usually 4 trips there and back twice, per thingie): As follows:

Monday:
School run X 4 = 20 miles
Tap dancing X 4 = 12 miles
Rainbows X 4 = 8 miles

Tuesday:
School run X 4 = 20 miles
Gymnastics X 4 = 12 miles
Brownies X 4 = 8 miles
Youth group X 4 = 12 miles

Wednesday:
School run X 4 = 20 miles
Ballet X 4 = 20 miles
Guides X 4 = 8 miles

Thursday:
School run X 4 = 20 miles
Gymnastics X 4 = 12 miles
Tap dancing X 4 = 12 miles

Friday:
School run X 4 = 20 miles
Youth group X 4 = 12 miles
Gymnastics X 4 = 12 miles

The above is just the ‘regular’ stuff, every night at least one of the kids needs picking up or dropping off at one of their friends’ houses which must be at least another 10 miles per day. The whole lot comes to about 250 miles per week. When you add it up, the cost of running a car is about a quid a mile (buying the car, servicing, fuel, road tax, insurance, etc….) So all in all running my kids around is costing me a cool £7000 per year. Also, contrary to popular belief, clearly I’m one of the hardest working people in the country.

But if you were a 9-6 PAYE desk jockey, they'd have to go on the bus. They wouldn't like that, I bet.

Damn right. Buses are for students and poor people. I was a student, went on the bus. Then I got a car. It's evolution.

They'd more than likely end up getting beaten up by some low-life crack-head. Why sould I expose my family to such risks if I don't need to. That's my attitude.
