Vw golf gti mk5

Been enjoying this section for months and thought I'd join up properly to post my pride and joy. Always been a keen petrol head, and this was my dream car when I was learning to drive 12 years ago (when they were first coming out).

At the time I was learning in a cherry Red Peugeot 106 xl, which my parents bought for me and my brother to start out. Shared this with my brother for 5 years through college and uni. Great car and have fond memories.

When I finally got a full time job I bought my own first car: another 106 but this time a quiksilver special edition. I wanted the gti but at 21 the insurance was horrendous and my job hardly paid me anything. Again this was an ace car and with hindsight a much safer option. I drove that car hard for 2 years and loved it.

A move from Yorkshire darn sarf then meant I needed something better for the fairly regular 200 mile motorway journey, so I went through 2 boring diesels in 3 years. The better of the 2 was a Peugeot 207 gt which was actually quite a nice car, but a little dull. I drove that down to the alps in summer 2013 and it never missed a beat. I stupidly sold this for a bigger 407 which was better on the motorway and worse everywhere else.

By 2015 things were looking up financially and I was thoroughly bored of the 407, so I decided to look for my favourite breed of car: a hot hatch. I found I could afford one the car I had always wanted - a mk5 golf gti.

Safe to say this one is staying. I plan on slowly upgrading parts but keeping the look oem+ as I am not keen on the overly modified vag cars that seem to dominate the Vw scene. It fits in nicely with my dad's 1966 beetle and 1972 bay window when back home in Yorkshire too!

I also have a mk5 GTI 5dr, mine too is totally standard with zero plans for it, its a family car. Whilst its a great all rounder with plenty of shove when you want it to been I've found the steering to be too heavy and just a little dull.

Also the VW famed "reliability" has struck for me, a rear door lock failed, temp sensor in the engine failed and the ABS ring on one wheel, all common issues, to put this in to perspective the car is a 57Reg with 70k on it and I only do 3k year and have had it 18months.

Still its does most things very well.


I've found the http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/ a good resource and helpful with there responses and not too "scene".
