Tick over problem
Discussion
Hello,
Wondered if ne one had encountered this problem. Started my S2 up yesterday and it reved up and down between 1200 annd 1800, all on it's own. Turned it off and on and it went away.
Thought all was okay but now once the engine has warmed through it ticks over fine until you give it some revs then it won't return to tick over but drops to less than 500 revs then packs up.
Any ideas?

IAC (Idle Air Control Valve) or wiring thereto would be favourite.
Edited to add:
As a first step, might be worth trying a reset on the IAC valve position: with ignition on and mobilised (but engine not running, of course) press the throttle slowly and fully 5 times. This tells the engine management computer to 'learn' the position for the IAC valve to maintain correct idle speed from scratch. If this doesn't work, check the wiring to the IAC to make sure it is securely connected and undamaged. After that, your call: either take a chance on replacing the IAC (about £70 I think), or seek specialist help.
Explanation (at risk of insulting your intelligence): The IAC is a computer controlled valve, driven by a small stepper motor, that allows a small amount of air to by-pass the closed throttle. Obviously, if the engine cannot breathe in any air at all, it cannot run. The IAC's job is to give it just enough air to maintain a steady idle speed. Too much and the revs will rise above normal idle, too little and the engine will die...which is why your symptoms sound like the IAC is playing silly buggers.

What state is your battery in? If you have left the car for any period (especially in this cold weather) the battery will discharge.
This is a common problem when the battery is low on charge, go for a good run the car will tick over erratically, but be fine under revs. Make sure you get plenty of charge into the battery, turn off the engine and restart, the problem should go away. If it persists then it is probably IAC.
Regards, Neil

Well back in from a top down blast in the sun beside Loch Lomond. Battery charge topped up I was still Having the stalling problem at Tarbet. I did the throttle trick at Tarbet and travelled back. All seems to be well with the stops on the way back no more stalling.
Thank you all for the advice.
