Wellwishers raised £10,000 to send her to California. But after tests, US doctors believe she only had swollen tonsils and say she now eats normally.
Tilly and her family are due to fly back to the UK at the weekend.

The youngster was treated at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Stanford, California.
Her occupational therapist Marianna Thorn told BBC News Tilly had not had food through her tube for the past 10 days and was now eating properly.
She said: "Tilly should be perfectly normal. She has a very long history of being fed through a tube, so we gave her the option of feeding her slowly here at the hospital so we could monitor her weight.
"Our tests showed she only appeared to have swollen tonsils," Ms Thorn added, "though she may have had a condition in the past.
"She is now fine, although she will need to have the valve into her tummy removed."

Yeah, but the problem is that the whole medical profession will close ranks and nothing will get done.
I completely understand when scurulous legal cases are an attempt to extract money from the medical profession. But, when something has genuinely gone wrong - what happens? Someone gets early retirement and its all brushed under the carpet..... NOT GOOD ENOUGH...
I too want to see people fired, doctors struck off and the care "system" used re-evaluated and changed so that a 7 (SEVEN) year mis-diagnosis doesnt happen again.

Yeah, but the problem is that the whole medical profession will close ranks and nothing will get done.

The entire administrative collective that some call a government should all resign on mass. We will do a better job looking after ourselves. As for the NHS, it has been for years and years, nothing more than a dumping ground to accomodate the governments dubious immigration policies for people who profess to be nurses and carers because they can manage to give some old body a bed bath. The country is f***ed and it is never going to get better. here's to the next four futile years, we havn't seen anything yet...

How do you know she hasn't recovered from whatever condition she had that caused her to aspirate (whether it was a bulbar palsy or not). She would have had surgery once to place the peg and then it is a case of plugging her feed in regularly.
In the article the OT says she may have had a bulbar palsy, but now she doesn't appear to. That is all the information you have, so demanding heads roll is a tad out of proportion is it not.

Lots of my patients encounter swallowing difficulties on the whole we do not operate and the patients die eventually. What does that make me conclusion jumpers?

Don't know the facts of this case but I know it must not have been pleasant experience for the little girl or her family.
My grandmother has taken "food" directly into her stomach since around 1945 it is not a nice thing to have to do.
Im just happy that a little girl will be back to normal doing normal things that little girls do.

I find your post highly offensive, being a son of one of the "immigrants" who have led this country to be "f***ed". This kind of post highlights an astonishing level if ingratitude for thousands of people who have come over to work here, and have supported the population and kept them healthy, despite working in a poorly funded, poorly managed NHS.
The reason there are so many immigrants and their kids, working in the NHS, is because successive governments have failed to train enough staff to support the system. Also people here don't want to work in these professions, and some people from here are too stupid to work in these professions. Is that the fault of the immigrants? Nope.
In addition, this story is very sad, but you don't see the other side of the coin. Millions of people given a high standard of care by highly professional people.
As for the wonderful US healthcare system, the parents of this child would have paid tens of thousands of dollars for adequate treatment, otherwise the child would get little.
Oh and for a real reverse story, perhaps I can tell you about 2 patients I have seen this week, with problems produced by utterly incompetant American doctors.
First was a 4 year old child with a squint, who had a botched squint operation, with so much scarring left over, it is going to be nigh on impossible to repair, leaving him disfigured for life.
Second was a 74 year old woman, who was told she had a "routine" cataract operation. Routine apart from the fact there was massive trauma to the iris and other anterior structures of the eye, and the intraocular lens, was floating in the back part of the eye.
Yeah f**king wonderful American doctors eh? Best in the world eh? I bet those patients are glad they spent a collective $40000 on their treatments to be a) disfigured for life and b) effectively blinded.

We dont know what happened to any sort of condition. Whether it healed up or just disappeared. However, what is the case is that the full details are not known.

Is my reaction out of proportion? Given that we dont know the full facts yes. Knowing full well that any mistake (if any) will simply be brushed over and forgotten about isnt acceptible.
I find that the whole process for handling complaints and issues within the medical profession absolutely shocking. To take extreme examples, what about the recent plastic surgen who was only struck off after hundreds of complaints and I wont even mention the whole "shipman" affair.
Why cant I expect accountability and fairness? Someone at Tescos cocks up majorily, they can expect the sack. A CEO makes a big wrong decisions and he's out on his ear. For gods sake we even had a CEO of a NHS trust who lied about his medical qualifications and previous jobs.... and NO ONE NOTICED OR QUESTIONED IT.
Why cant we question these things? Transparency is all I ask.....

I don't know you, or 968, but your response is rather ott IMHO.
As I read it, 968 was simply responding to the outrageous overgeneralisations at the top of this thread. Aside from one oath (used in an emphatic way) 968 stuck to pointing out personal experiences, (hardly "hurl insults & curse words at Americans in broadstroke fashion") and responding to an insult to his parents.
At least his perspective is a first hand one as opposed to the opinions formed from a diet of strictly controlled/biased reporting from our "Ministry of Truth" aka the press.
As ever, when our news media report a slanted 10% of a 'story', some people jump to the most massive conclusions (as intended by the media) and stick the boot in to medics in general.
FWIW I have worked in both NHS and Private medical establishments and have seen both shockingly bad treatment in Private Clinics and superb treatment in NHS Hospitals.
The NHS also has a highly developed system or dealing with complaints and if anything, being judged by a panel of your peers tends to lead to stricter conclusions as they are afraid of being accused of bias.
