Need some pointers about this track only car I'm interested in. Evil bay ref:- 172155797104 Does anyone recognise it?
Ive sent the guy some questions, but because its got no registration plates or log book I'm struggling to do any research. Only clue is production number?
Am awaiting his reply, but aint holding my breath (so to speak!!)

It does seem like a particularly vague description.......and no receipts for a recent engine re-build?????? Who even did the re-build?

How does he know that the Car "drives sweetly". As it's not road registered he is unlikely to have driven it under load and at high revs for any time at all.

Crikey, bargain or massive risk...........?????

On the back of the roll bar, it seems to say "insure motorsport.com" - they used to sponsor one of the Caterham race series (about 2008?) does this indicate that it's a former race car? I dont think they exist anymore and if you type that name into google it eventually gets you to,"Bluefin"

The number shown in one of the photos seems to say "Aug 04" so I'm assuming it's a 2004 build? Have you asked Caterham if they have a record of that number and what the original build spec was? Not that it probably matters 12 years later!

The engine is a 1.6 and not a 1.8. You can tell as it still has the MSA seals on the engine. Which where only fitted to 1.6 as per academy and roadsport champs.
Chassis is also an imperial one.

Is the engine seal the blue thing next to the yellow filler cap?

What's the issue with the chassis being imperial?

There is no issue

Imperial = Arch Motors built the original 7 chassis for lotus and for Caterham, the latest is built by Caterham but not using the same method as its welded instead os being brazed.

Part 2

The Arch jig number (1 or 2) is stamped on the chassis adjacent to the roll over hoop mount on the RHS. This can get hidden if the car has been re painted. - See more at: http://www.lotus7.club/forum/techtalk/arch-motors-...

I have just realised there's an anomaly here - the seller claims that he was told that the engine has been recently rebuilt, but how can that be if it still has the seals in place?

Its not an issue:

All classes - Sealing of engines will be more rigorously policed in 2015. During the closed season it is highly recommended that any engine work, requiring removal of engine seals, is carried out by an Authorised Engine Builder. If an engine does not carry seals fitted by an Authorised Engine Builder then that engine cannot be used in the championship. This means that if seals are removed by a non Authorised Engine Builder the competitor must expect to have to pay for an engine inspection by an Authorised Engine Builder before that engine can be sealed and used in the championship

http://www.graduates.org.uk/docs/2014116_Summary%2...

Even gas meter's can have seals removed and replaced by authorised engineers

Indeed, but there are no receipts and no info on who/ when rebuild carried out. Maybe it wasn't re-built at all and the seals remain from when it was a race car in. 2008/9 ish ?

If the seller has no history then buyer beware, I no nothing about the car but if you wish to have more history maybe there is something more suitable on Pistonheads or even Caterham themselves.

You could always try the Lotus 7 Club for information about the car

You are right, but as with the other "race car thread " I have contributed to, I have to sell something to buy anyway, so even if this is a bargain it's probably too soon for me, sadly.

Well I sent the chap some questions which he didn't answer to my satisfaction. If he was keen enough to sell, then surely he would have got the info that I requested from the previous owner! Bearing this in mind I shall not be showing any further interest!! Could still be a bargain for someone, but not me.
