Hi everyone,

I currently drive a BMW 1M and need to upgrade now my son is getting too heavy to lift into the back!

Have taken a couple of the RR SC (L322) for a test drive and they are a great car. Had a defender and a G Class previously and quite like the big 4x4s.

Wondered if anyone on the forum had experience of these in real life - dealer says they rarely have problems, but have driven at least one with intermittent faults on the parking cameras.

Is there anything else to look for, or would anyone suggest another car?

Thank you for your help!

Am pondering a similar move, lease is up on my Merc soon and am seriously considering a 2012 SC Range Rover on the basis that I can get one for similar outlay to another (boring) but new motor.

I only do 10k per year and some good indy LR garages hereabouts.

Been browsing here http://www.fullfatrr.com/wiki/Main_Page

Totally unbiased, just like PH wink

My thoughts exactly - tried a couple of times but cannot seem to buy a boring car! A good used SCRR seems about the same price as a new golf.

Always liked the big RR and love the barge handling - it's like a huge Tonks toy!

Just got rid of a TDV8 L322 and keep coming back to the 5.0 S/C for the winter... There doesn't seem to be many with astronomical miles on, however there are quite a few high mileage XKRs (same engine) that seem to be chugging along smoothly.

For the money, only the X6M or X5M come close. The BMWs wins on the performance front whereas the RR is far more luxurious (and the best blend of performance and luxury).

I guess the biggest decision would be the pre- or post-2011 version (gearstick or twirly knob).

Edit: It's late - are you looking at 4.2 or 5.0?

I could be wrong but there's something in the back of my mind telling me the 5.0SC still had the stick and not the 'twirly knob'.

If someone has one, feel free to chip in... smile

Thanks gents! It would be the 5.0 SC - still has the stick rather than the twisting knob like in the diesel.

Apparently the reliability in the 5.0 is better than the 4.2 - dealer said it is mechanically similar to the l405 in terms of the drive chain

May have to go first! Taking one out at the end of the week and will let you know how it goes - nice one owner example from a main dealer. One of the only ones I have found without the blacked out windows and black interior.

Typical dealer talking st smile, there has never been a reliability issue with the 4.2 S/C in the RR, its fairly bullet proof, along with the gearbox.. Its the rest of the car that you need to look out for, usual LR stuff, air suspension, electrics etc etc

Had a look on Autotrader earlier, it does look like the FFRR 5.0 never went over to the twirly knob!

I guess the fuel consumption could be a shock coming from a 1M, they get through a tank at an insane rate.

In my experience, the fault is normally that the cameras don't engage when you select R, i.e. wiring/connection issue rather than anything to do with the cameras.

The fuel economy on either a 4.2 or 5.0 SC isn't that bad.

My 4.2 returns 17-19mpg on average and will easily creep into the 20's at a steady motorway cruise.

I gather from the many 5.0 owners on the FFRR forum that the 5.0 is even better.

I've had mine (4.2, '07) about 6 years now and love it! It has never let me down (touch wood), and the few issues it has had have been sorted when it has been serviced. The rear camera went a bit dodgy recently, but a replacement camera sorted that.

Most of the work that mine has required (replacement radiator and suspension bushes) have been listed on the service notes as items to keep an eye on for 1-2 years prior to actually needing the work, so if I was buying one now I'd take a look at previous service history to see if there is anything likely to need attention.

Great cars - I've said for a long time that if I could only own one car for the rest of my life, I think it would be a Supercharged Range Rover.

I bought a 5.0 S/C RR about 6 months ago, 2010, 80k miles. I had a TDV8 before but got fed up with the turbo lag and some rather big bills so decided it was time to go for the V8 supercharger.

Having had a series of Jag superchargers (4.0, 4.2 engines) I wasn't concerned about the longevity of the engine, my jags all had high miles and the engines were all bullet proof which is more than I could say about the TDV8 which needed new Turbos and EGRs.

The car does indeed have the traditional gearstick, I don't know if it ever got changed up to the twirly thing or not like the jags did.

Within 1 day of buying the car privately there was a suspension error code displayed, I thought I'd bought a lemon. But a quick google and 10 minutes with a soldering iron to extend some wires on top of the front damper had that sorted. Someone had been in there before and done a st soldering job, I suspect it's the reason the previous owner got rid as otherwise the car has been absolutely faultless. I'm fussy with my cars but I've not had to fix or change anything. I had the car serviced and checked over by my trusted specialists and they couldn't find fault, low'ish brake pads being the only comment.

17.5 mpg average so far based on town use and 100mph motorway cruising mainly.

Performance. smile Most of the time I just drive around fairly sedately, not a car designed to be driven like a sportscar. But... every so often there comes a time when a quick getaway is needed, and feck me it's quick off the line when you want it. When I first swapped over from the TDV8 it took some time to re-calibrate myself on the country roads I was used to as I was finding myself coming into bends way quicker than the TDV8, it's deceptive how quickly these can gather pace.

I had a 4.2SC and changed it for a 5.0SC a couple of years ago. It is a significantly better car with the only downside being that it doesn't make as nice a noise, and the seats are not as good (albeit still excellent). The 5.0SC is markedly quicker, the tech is more up to date (although a long way behind today's tech), and the facelifted car looks nicer to my eye. The Autobiography interior is a triumph.

I have had no engine or gearbox issues with either car. The suspension issue (snapped wire) referred to above is a known issue and solved in ten minutes. Eventually I'll probably have to stump up for another wire I guess. Servicing can be expensive if you use a main dealer, and tyres and brakes are pricey (I tend to do my own brakes nowadays as it's a dead easy job). MPG is better on the 5.0, but better not good. 20-22 mpg is available on a run if you go steady. Obviously you can achieve single figures if you're hooning.

My thought process when I changed was that the SC compared to the diesel was that the petrol car was cheaper to buy, the AB spec is lovely, and I don't do loads of miles so fuel consumption didn't matter greatly. I don't care what anyone says the petrol engine is much nicer than the diesel. Contemplating changing for a L405 but struggling to justify the additional cash. I did 5 hours back from the Lakes yesterday to remind me what a great piece of kit the FFRR is.
