Disco Sport & Evoque vs the competition
Discussion
I was recently in my local LR garage and the sales chap mentioned that they had some cracking deals on offer for the Disco Sport and Evoque. When questioned further it turns out they have taken delivery of a dozen Evoques and 6 Diso Sports that are cancelled orders.
So today I found myself at a Jaguar garage requiring about a new F Pace for the Mrs. Apparently they have been overwhelmed with orders and cannot get us into a car until the end of the year.
Coincidence? Or have the average Evoque Disco Sport buyer decided they must have the latest newcomer? Thing is on paper the F Pace is leagues above - I know 0-60 isn't everything but the jag can be had in 5.8 for diesel and 5.1 for petrol. Nothing from LR can compete with that can it? As in not even within 3 seconds of that???
Then there's the Macan, Q5, X3 all of which are more powerful - but with the exception possibly of the Macan less desire able.
Anyone else think LR might have some problems if they lose their cash cow. Maybe, finally they will offer something with a bit of grunt in their smaller models?

Define competition.
The way I see it, LR has two competitors. a) Those that compete on genuine 4x4 ability and utility, and b) those that compete on 'image'. We considered the F-pace, which falls more into category b). Same for Audi/BMW/MB I feel. There are fewer manufacturers competing for a). In the end we replaced our D4 with a Subaru Outback. Sure, it lacks the badge appeal of the other competition, but in terms of utility and ability it blows the others with their road-rubber and 21" wheels out of the proverbial water.
I guess it also helped that it came with about 10k worth of what other manufacturers (LR included) would consider 'options' included as standard. The only things I miss from my D4 is the heated front screen (a patenting, rather than engineering issue) and the proper drop down tailgate for Welly removal without falling into the boot or getting a dirty arse.
I cant really see myself back in a LR very soon. I was distinctly underwhelmed by the Disco Sport, and the spy shots of the new D5 look awful. Maybe the 2018(?) Defender will change my mind, if it ever happens.

Wow, just had a look. I hate the fact that all the individual models have lost their identity; LR vehicles today are about as east to distinguish from each other as a random row of Audis.the spy shots of the new D5 look awful.
I know this sort of comment has been done to death over several marques, but that D5 really does look like it will help to keep D4 residuals VERY high!
